York like cities in England

We are looking at return trip later this year to England and are focusing on return to York for 3-4 nights at a minimum. Can anyone suggest some similar cities/villages that have the same quaint look and feel that are reachable by train or bus for a few nights stay in England. In our travels, we have enjoyed places like Colmar and Strasbourg, France; Bruges, Belgium; and Lucca, Italy and are looking for similar locations to visit. Thanks for any suggestions.

+1 for Claudia's suggestion of St Albans. I would also suggest Durham - beautiful Cathedral, castle and historic streets. Still technically a city, but much smaller than York though. And reachable by train from York if you're heading there anyway.

I was in Chester last fall and I think it's got a bit of a York vibe to it, architecturally speaking.

We loved the vibe of Winchester with a day trip to Portsmouth and then Canterbury with a bus ride to Whitstable.
mosesrus: loved your city list…agree with Colmar, Strasbourg, Bruges, and Lucca. Have you been to Arles in France? We, too, are returning to York this year for a few days with a visit to Durham. Starting our trip in Wells, then Worcester, York, then Peterborough to visit Burghley House and the cathedral before a few days in London.

What is it you particularly like about York?

Chester with its walls, cathedral and ruined castle and river is probably the obvious suggestion.

As well as places already mentioned, I'd also add Norwich (and in particular Elm Hill with its medieval houses and cobbles). It has a splendid Catheedtral, Castle and as many if not more medieval churches. There's a river too...

Thank-you all. We plan to include Durham, Chester and Norwich with York and London on a fall trip we are putting together.

Yes, Wolter’s World on YouTube is great.
We watch lots of YouTube videos when deciding where to go and Wolter’s World is our favorite, he does videos on lots of places.

I actually don't care for Wolter and his "schtick" but sometimes he passes along useful info
