Will be in York for 3 nights this October. Looking at a real range of B & Bs. Has any one stayed at The Hazelwood, 23 St. Marys or The Bar Convent? If so, any comments on your stay?
I stayed at the Bar Convent for 4 nights in October 2015. Traveling solo. Had a nice en suite single room, which had just been redecorated, with a bathroom that had just been totally remodeled. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.
It's just over the road (aka across the street) from the Micklegate. And down the hill from the train station. I liked the location, an easy walk to see the sights in York, but obviously it's not in the shadow of the Minster if that's what you want.
On our floor there was a big full kitchen for guests to use. I didn't make much use of it except once I think I brought a takeaway meal in and ate at the table there.
There's also a coin operated laundry machine for guests to use. I was looking forward to that as I was in the middle of a two week trip and needed to wash clothes. Sadly, I checked in on a weekend when the machine was out of order. However, a member of staff, when I asked about it, came to my rescue. She showed me the room with the washers and dryers where the staff does the hotel laundry, and said I could use it after hours to run a couple of loads of my clothes. At no charge. So I was able to leave York with clean clothes after all. That was so nice!
Breakfast was served down in the cafe and I remember it as good. Cooked to order. Edited to add: I originally said it wasn't' a buffet, but now I think there may have been a breakfast buffet for cold items. I don't do cereal and rolls, etc., so I don't pay much attention to that stuff when it is set out buffet-style. I ordered my cooked breakfast from the cafe staff.
I haven’t stayed at either so I can’t comment exactly on what either us like. However, as said previously both are outside the walls (just!!) but as York is a small compact city that shouldn’t be a problem as will only take a 10 min walk from either into the centre of the city. If it makes a difference the hazelwood is probably marginally closer and is probably a flatter walk. Bar convent on the other hand is very convenient for the station. Bar Convent also has restaurants and bars on its doorstep and that could be an advantage or disadvantage depending on how you look at it!
Thanks for your replies. I should have mentioned, I have been to York before, but only on day trips. It is such a pleasant town I want to relax and explore more. Thanks for the Bar Convent review. I hope someone who has stayed at 23 St. Marys will comment as it looks lovely, but is pricey.
Use the search feature as there have been many recommendations made that you might want to consider. I've recommended The Gillygate Guest House. Mark & Joyce are wonderful innkeepers. Their B&B is a 3 minute walk from the Minster, Joyce cooks a fabulous breakfast, and they provide enjoyable accommodations. Just a 15 minute from the train station.
Yes, Continental, I have already taken the research step. I have narrowed it down to the 3 I mentioned and hope to get more comments from folks who has stayed at one of those.
The Minster Hotel York was our small hotel. It was perfect for our visit to York. Location was great, not far from the city and several restaurants. Free parking was available behind the hotel in a secure location. Our room was spacious and very nice. Hotel staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was extra with a choice of a great buffet or full English breakfast. We were very happy with the buffet.
