York and LHR

My husband and I will be spending 4 days in York, after spending a month in Amersham to watch our grandchildren. We have a day to train back to London before our flight departs from LHR. Wondering what is the best place to go on to that would be easy access back to LHR. Windsor?

It all depends on how early your flight is from Heathrow the following day.

I actually did this last spring. I ended a tour in York then took a train to London, changed stations from Kings Cross to Paddington and took the train to Windsor using my contactless CC for that last leg. I wound up staying 2 nights in Windsor and took a taxi to LHR. It was less than half an hour and about 25£.

The only down side was airplane noise. It stopped about 10P and restarted about 6A. Others on the forum say they didn’t notice that but I live where I hear very little road or plane sounds so it was noticeable to me.

Last September I used

to take a train from King's Cross to the station in York (and then back again). It was about a two hour journey. When I arrived back in London, I took the tube from King's Cross back to Heathrow.

A few years ago I ended my England trip with a night or two in Windsor. So easy to get to Heathrow from there: I used a prebooked car service (Windsor Cars). If you do visit Windsor, make time if you can to venture across the bridge into Eton too…it was a few years ago but I remember some interesting shops on the main street and it was fun to see the Eton students in their formal attire as they walked between classes.
