I’m a solo traveler who will be in York for two nights in May. Should I pay a bit more to stay right by Clifford’s tower but a longer walk from the train station or stay in a B&B from Ricks book? My concerns are more personal safety as a woman traveling alone. Let me add that I’m traveling by train.
We stayed at the Minster Hotel, walking distance from the north gate.
I also stayed at The Minster Hotel and it was a short walk from the train station but still close enough to all the attractions. It was quiet and had more of a residential feel, whereas the Clifford Tower area was livelier and busier.
I stayed at the Milner (previously the Principal) directly adjacent to the train station and I liked it and it felt safe. I was with other women, some who stayed there and others who stayed a few minutes farther from the train station but more centrally located. Both neighborhoods felt safe. I liked the convenience of being right next to the train station. One friend who was in the annex did not like her room much. We walked around in the evening, going out to dinner etc and there were plenty of people around so it seemed safe enough although apparently York is popular for weekends away with heavy drinking and we did see some of that.
We stayed at St. Raphel's Guesthouse B & B that was recommended in RS book and LOVED it! We took UBER from train station to the guesthouse. Lots of sites to see by walking too. We'd definitely stay there again, as well as we loved York. Based on our time there, I'd say you'd be just fine alone.
I got a room at st Raphael’s guesthouse. Rick’s recommendation and definitely more economical than most! Thank you all for your input.
