Would you stay overnight in Durham?

Initially, I'd planned to just have Durham be a day trip from Newcastle. It seems to be the ideal day trip with the cathedral worth at least a half day and then an interesting city to stroll around and visit a cafe and a pub.

But, the more time I spend researching Durham, the more I'm thinking it is worthy of an overnight or even a two night stay.

Anyone stayed overnight? I'm generally a big city person, but Durham looks decent enough and not a sleepy town.

It'll be at the end of November, so I'm expecting the worst as far as weather.

Yes stay the night. Enjoy the Ye Olde Elm Pub. Nice stroll up a hill to it. Christmas market should be occurring. Great to stroll along the river. Throughly enjoyed my November stay in Durham. Cathedral is spectacular. Both the Oriental and Archeology museums are well done and don’t miss Flat Whites for coffee and cake.

One of my favorite memories of our trip this summer was the night we spent at the Marriott in Durham. Relaxing, nice walking path along the river which might not be as enjoyable in Nov.

We stayed the night on our way from York to Hexam, near Hadrians Wall. I thought one night was a decent amount of time there.

We stayed at the Marriott close to the old city downtown and loved Durham. We stayed two nights after visiting York. After Durham we went to Haltwhistle and saw the Roman Army Museums and Hadrian's Wall. It was great in the North of England.

The cathedral is amazing. The Venerable Bede is buried there.

We loved Durham and spent a few nights there. The Beamish open air museum is near there and also well worth a visit.

Durham can be covered in half a day. The cathedral is worth visiting, but the rest of the city is a bit of a let down with a poor retail provision. Personally, I would prefer to spend time at the nearby Beamish Open Air Museum or further up the coast e.g. visiting Holy Island, which is stunning.

On my next trip to northern England, I am hoping to get to Durham. If, like me, you are into interesting older buildings and have a car to get around, check out Escomb Church, one of three intact Anglo-Saxon churches still in the country. It’s built from stone thought to have been taken from the Binchester Roman Fort (one stone in the church walls references a specific legion) and dates to the mid-7th century.

We spent three nights in Durham, using it as a base for a day trip to Hadrian's Wall and also visiting the cathedral and castle (now a college) across the green. We took a boat ride on the river. It's a very nice city worth an overnight, or a full day with two nights, even if you're not using it as a base for the wall.
