My son and I will be in London for five days. We will take the Tube and National Rail a fair amount, including to Kew Gardens and Bath. As I understand it, he qualifies for a substantial discount if I get him a visitor oyster card and put a young traveler discount on it, but the visitor oyster card has to be ordered by mail before we get there, and the young traveler discount has to be added in person when we get there, which I won’t be able to do when we arrive at Gatwick before we take the train into town.
I understand the discount could also go on a regular oyster card, but then we give up the daily caps. It will cost at least 8 pounds to have the visitor oyster card sent here. And it’s a substantial disadvantage to me that the card has to be topped up or I have to guess how much money to put on it, versus just tapping in and out with Apple Pay or credit card. Am I really going to save enough money that it’s worth this song and dance of ordering the card ahead of time?
I wonder how many people actually find out about the existence of this card and procure ahead of their trip.
