Worried for our RS friends in LA

My thoughts and prayers go out to anyone affected by the incredible fire situation. Thinking of Claudia in particular as I know she is from there. I know LA is huge, but this looks like it is impacting a very large area of that city. Please be safe and wish all of you better days ahead as you deal with this tragic event.

That is wonderful news! Didn’t see that post. It is such a tragedy. Thank you for letting me know about Claudia.

I’m ok. Live in Hollywood. Only impact so far is smoke.

KTLA the local news station is a block away on Sunset Blvd.

Fires have been East and West of me.

Listening to the news off and on … have an escape plan…

Vehicle is gassed, have cash and CC’s, case of water
So far so good.

Mother Nature is making certain we all know SHE Rules!

Thinking of you Claudia, take care!

We used the Watch Duty App to keep an eye on how close the fires were getting to us up here last summer.

Just saw a post from someone on another travel site whose house was a complete loss and they are trying to figure out how to replace passport. So sad.

I just took this opportunity to update/improve my evacuation list. (I live in Northern California, nowhere near the current fires, but we've been on fire evacuation standby in the past, including last summer.)

Keeping it travel related, top of the list (after the dog) - passport and birth certificate.

UPDATE:

What is being called the Sunset Fire ( Runyon Canyon) too close for comfort (1.5 miles) so I evacuated.

Presently safe listening to the news on my vehicles radio. Freeway was jammed. Grateful winds not insane so helicopters and the water planes could respond by filling up at the nearby Hollywood Reservoir and fly over the Hollywood Hills at Runyon Canyon. Old 1930’s homes in the area along with newer builds. Apartment buildings as well not to mention at Hollywood Blvd and Highland Blvd the venerable Graumans Chinese Theatre. News reports of teens wanting likes on Tic Tock being dispersed by LAPD for blocking roads.

Anyway, believe I’m safe where I am for the moment which is the SilverLake neighborhood. Going to save phone battery now.

Wishing the very best to Claudia and others who live in the affected areas. What a terrible, terrible tragedy.

I spent 20 years living in LA and many of the areas affected by fires are areas I know well. (One I used to live near.)

I'm shocked at just how many homes and other buildings have been destroyed. Streets I know well. I just sit here and shake my head.

Appreciate the concern.

Tragic loss of homes and lives.

News footage showing the absolute devastation of neighborhoods.

Grateful to city and county fire personnel.

Not sure the bad news is completely over.

Time will tell.

I hope you can get some rest now as it is about 4am over there. From the BBC news it looks like most of the evacuation order for your particular fire is now lifted.

Stay strong Claudia. Although I can’t offer shelter or any other immediate needed assistance (wish that were possible!) please know I am thinking about you and praying that the Fire response agencies can get this under control and stay safe themselves while doing so.

A horrific tragedy.
I am watching in horror (yesterday & today) as CNN shows the flames & destroyed neighborhoods.
Hoping and praying that people were able to get out in time.
Claudia,
I'm relieved that you left home, as the Hollywood Hills fire seems to be very close indeed to some of the areas you have talked about (on the forum) taking your walks near your home.

Stay safe.

Sending good vibes for calm winds ASAP. Yesterday several of my local fire stations sent rigs and firefighters, help is coming. I know others in this forum have been personally impacted by fires (Russ in Paradise for example) and know what Angelinos are going through. Definitely a good reminder to update my bug out bag and important papers - you just never know. Stay safe.

LA has truly experienced tragedy this week. Very happy to be in the desert, far from the wildfires, but we have many friends with homes closer to the conflagration. I have to think the dollar cost of the damage could reach the trillion dollar mark. Watch for bankruptcies in the insurance and reinsurance industry. And of course the human costs have been immense. Please consider donating to the Red Cross to help them respond to the emergency.

Normalcy has returned. Clear blue skies. Was out at 9am to shop at Trader Joe’s and to get rolls of quarters from the adjacent Wells Fargo bank.

Was going to Petco and load up on Pet Food to donate but Pasadena Humane Society posted no longer needed. Checking on Malibu.

Mother Nature seems to have calmed following her devastating hissy fits. Also believe both the Sunset fire and the one in the Valley were the result of arsonists.

Thanks for the PM’s.

Life goes on!

Good news for today! Praying the worst is behind LA and the recovery can begin. It’s so hard to see the images on the news. I have never seen anything as catastrophic looking. Take care of yourself and thanks for checking in!

Isn’t over yet. New fires tonight. Not in the Palisades or Altadena but in the mountains above Encino.

Definitely arson as a man got iphone footage of an individual lighting a fire. That and twits with drones trying to film footage to show on tik tock are a huge problem for the pilots of the water planes trying to douse the flames. Human stupidity never ceases to amaze me!

Lahaina perhaps? // 8 months after the fire they ( Maui) were still clearing away the debris.

It's going to be a MESS for a LONG time.

I heard on the news today that one of the water Bombers sent from Quebec was knocked out of commission after striking a drone.

I thought the video footage of the Hawaii fires were incredibly horrific, but bc of the density of the urban development, this seemed even worse to me. ALL of these disasters, the flooding, the fires, the hurricanes…
My heart breaks for the impacted. I’ve lost power/water here for a few days and even that brief/ minimal situation unnerved our household. I can’t even begin to comprehend losing my home entirely.
Eastroots, that is awful what you went through as well. Goodness. Yes, it is going to take a long time for all of these communities. I hope they get all the resources they need.

Apparently the Palisades fire has reignited and is traveling toward Brentwood and UCLA. Nightmarish.

Why??? Why would anyone do this??? Put them in jail forever, when they catch them.
I was wondering about arson, considering the original fires all started about the same time in different locations.
Sure it's been dry, but there were no lightning strikes in the area, which is usually a cause.

I agree Rebecca. There are some really evil people in this world. The pain they caused. Put them away and throw away the key.

Once saw a sign at a novelty shop:

"NO TRESPASSING-- Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be prosecuted"

Arsonists and looters should have this philosophy applied to them

The idiots with drones should be given a free parachute lesson half way to Hawaii.
