We are flying on British Airways from Boston to London next spring (2022) and am wondering if the extra money between "Word Traveler" and "World Traveler Plus" is worth it.
I’ll probably be in the minority here, but in many trips, we’ve stuck with the basic, cheapest fare. Select our seats during online check-in, 24 hours prior to departure, and have always gotten 2 seats together, no extra legroom, but no extra money. We earn Avios frequent flier points, but don’t use them for upgrading, just for actual tickets.
It's a purely subjective call.
My wife and I opt for World Traveler Plus from Denver because we find it easier to get some sleep on the redeye going over. The difference in cost isn't that outrageous, and we generally feel that it's worth it for the extra legroom, wider seats, and smaller cabin.
At this stage in our life, we are opting for the premium seats. If you can afford it, you should do it. You will be a bit more comfortable.
I try to go World Traveler Plus as often as possible. The area is smaller with fewer folks/seats. There are generally fewer babies. There is a bit more room per seat. I have found it worth the cost, especially on the way over.
It is worth it to me!
I would say distance and physical flexibility would be factors. As seniors from the west coast, we’ll spend the money to arrive in halfway decent condition and actually able to unbend enough to get out of our seats. But, your distance is shorter, so you probably want to assess the cost to your travel budget. If the cost impact is minimal, I’d do it.
If you have the money then why not. More room, more comfort.
For years flew economy but on one flight the noisy children, crying babies and rude parents generated my “never again “ mindset.
My preferred airline is Virgin Atlantic. Book Premium Economy. Worth every penny.
Bob, That is the route and airline I fly. However, I fly the day flight over. For that flight it is not necessary and I generally don’t fly Plus as the flight is only 6 hours and one is not trying to sleep. If you plan on taking an overnight flight, I would suggest the Plus if it doesn’t hurt your budget too much. You might be more able to sleep in plus. That being said, we might do Plus next time for the less crowded section.
Check business class fares from time to time. You are traveling during low season and therefore there may be super sweet deals. Most will likely require transfers. I highly recommend Swiss with a transfer in Zurich.
Personally, I find prem econ to not be worth its price. Business class fares are obviously more $$$ but the benefits outweigh the price.
I've never flown WT+, any transatlantic flight is now business or first because I simply can't cope with such a duration in economy. From what I've seen of the WT+ cabin it doesn't look to be worth the increase in cost. I've had good luck with fares with BA when comparing different departure dates and on several occasions I've found first class flights that were only slightly more expensive than business just by flying out a day earlier than planned, I'm sure the same works for economy.
One trick for getting business class fares at a discount is to buy miles. Alaska Air has a generous mileage program which often offers purchase bonuses. In fact, there is one going on now till Oct 30.
EDIT: The last day to buy Alaska miles with bonus is Oct 30.
Business and above get you into airport lounges, if that is a consideration. I enjoyed it in Dec 2019 - lounge in Philly and Heathrow and then coming back via Vienna.
Worth every penny. You're in a curtained off section with approx. 5-8 rows depending on the plane.
Plan enough in advance when purchasing tickets you always get affordable fares.
As Robert said - it is a purely subjective call. Personally, if I can get it, I'd take it in a heartbeat. I'd still check business class fares because there are occasionally specials. But WT+ offers larger seats and a quieter, smaller area of the cabin than regular economy. If your wallet allows for it, in my opinion (and the more important one - that of my wife) is that yes, it is indeed worth it.
We flew BA World Traveler + for the first time in August (Heathrow to Los Angeles). The extra 8" legroom was a big deal. Also, it's easier to get two seats together without a 3rd in your row. (We don't like to climb over strangers or have them climb over us.) It costs more but we're adding it to our budget from now on. Business class would be even better but we tried it going the other direction and the benefits didn't justify the cost for us.
