Woman's Haircut in London

A fun thing will be that I will be due or overdue for a haircut on about June 1 when I arrive in London. What are your suggestions for a short do on a 69-year-old? I want it to not break the bank, but the most severe budget is not necessary if the experience is good. I'll be staying in Earl's Court area. My stylist here insists on a photo of the salon too.

Why not wait till you get there and get suggestions from the stylist? Or are you asking for suggestions for a place to go?

Many places charge £75-£120 in central London. Is this within your budget? All salons look pretty much the same - not sure in the point of a photo!

I've had my hair cut three times in Europe over the last two summers. It was an interesting experience and all the haircuts were fine. I learned, though, that if you're staying in a nice hotel (the only over-$100 room I've ever had) and ask for a recommendation for a hair salon in Bolzano, Italy, you will pay approximately Washington DC prices. No doubt Rome or London would be considerably worse.

Wandering the back streets in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and Santiago de Compostela, Spain, yielded much less expensive choices. (How do you know you really, really need a haircut? You walk into a salon in SdeC and the stylist incorrectly assumes, from your bedraggled appearance, that you are a pilgrim!)

I say: It's only a haircut (not a perm or a color job), so live dangerously! Pick your own spot, maybe on a day when the weather's rotten and you don't mind escaping it for a while. There's not even a language issue in London. Well, not a significant one, anyway.

I've lived in London since 2012 and had a tough time finding a salon that didn't break the bank.

Most salons charge around £60 for a cut and that was way more than I wanted to spend.

The past few years I've been going here:

I go as a hair model, so a trainee stylist cuts my hair. They've had lessons, but need a client to practice on. Haircuts take a few hours but their trainer is watching and checking regularly, so you still go out with a good cut. It's £20 a cut so much more affordable and about as cheap as you can get in the center of London.

I'm not suggesting you do that, but from my experience, the salon is pretty nice. They've got returning clientele and friendly staff. Women's haircuts cost between £60-100 which is pretty standard for London.

It's not in Earl's Court, but Fitzrovia is pretty close to Oxford Street/Tottenham Court Road and the British Museum, so easy to get to if you'll be in the center. They've also got a cute shopfront and interior and it's on a typical London side street, so it'd make a nice photo. If you go there, be sure to check out the passage way under Newman Arm. It's adorable, especially when there are flowers blooming.

When I lived in London, one of my work colleagues swore by the Vidal Sassoon Training Academy. She said you had to be very patient as the students are slow, but well supervised. It is very inexpensive.

I've had my hair cut at the Trevor Sorbie Salon in Covent Garden and the Aveda Salon on High Holborn, but a cut and blow dry will be pricey at either of these places when compared to the U.S.

Ah, this post brought back some marvelous college memories. All my classmates who went on the London Program in the 70's went to Vidall Sassoon to get a hair cut. It was a right of passage. :)

Thanks so much for all of this reality check information. The usual rates are considerably more than I'm accustomed to paying, but I think I'll live spontaneously and chalk it all up to travel experience. I can't see spending several hours just to get a cheaper haircut from a student. I figure this is one instance where speaking the same language (sort of) will be a big advantage over trying to get a haircut in Paris.

I'm sure it will be a memorable experience and a good souvenir.

Haircut translation tip for the UK: fringe = bangs. ;-)

I had my haircut in Genoa, Italy and it was certainly a memorable, but slightly stressful experience. I did learn a few words - scalata (similar to scala, or steps) means layers, frangia means fringe/bangs and ciuffo means side-swept fringe/bangs. It was a fun language lesson and cultural experience, but good to go into with the attitude that you won't be fussy about the outcome and it will be a unique souvenir (and if it's a bad cut, it will grow out eventually).

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

I think it would be fun to have a haircut in London. Here in the little town in Ohio where I live, a color, cut and styled (short hair) will be from $80.00 - $100.00. I've never thought about getting a haircut in London, but it might have to be on my to do list the next trip. I wouldn't mind spending €60.00-75.00.
Let us know about your experience. Have a great trip.
