I plan to be in England for the solstice and am thinking there will be lots of crowds at Stonehenge. Are there other standing circles or locations that might be a fun winter experience?
Avebury near Oxford is almost as crowded as Stonehenge but smaller.
The Castlerigg stone circle outside Keswick in the Lake District is fine at any time of year. National Trust property.
Try looking up stone circles on a National Trust or British Heritage site.
Rollright Stones near Chipping Norton
Long and still associated with witchcraft
There are many, many stone circles all over England. How many of them are aligned with solstice sunrises is another question. What part of England will you be in, and will you have a car? Not many of the circles are easy to reach by public transport.
