Windsor question

We're planning our trip to London for June and I'm hoping someone might be able to help with a question. I haven't been to Windsor Castle in 10 years and don't really remember the walk to the entrance since we had a car and parked in a lot. My mom will be with us and we will be arriving by train from London. I understand the station is near the castle but I was thinking there was a hill we had to walk up to get to the entrance of the castle. My mom has a bad knee and can do some steps but not a ton and a lot of up hill walking. Can someone please help me with what the walk is like to the entrance? I don't remember very many steps within the castle or the chapel, is my memory correct?

Thank you!

If you don't get an answer, go to street views google maps and see if you can determine the route.

This may help
I have never been but I whenever I have a similar question about how the route is to a destination I use google maps which has street views. This one to the castle showed and says flat terrain from the walk to the train station to the entrance

I was there last April. It’s about a 5-10 minite walk from the train station and it is slightly uphill. However, once you get into the castle the path does go uphill again as you go past the big round tower to the state apartments. There’s a few stairs as well to get up to the apartments. I believe there’s alot of walking on cobblestones as well. Does she use a cane or a walker? Have you checked to see if they offer wheelchairs for use while within the castle grounds?

I went last May on a Sunday and arrived in Windsor around noon. The wait to buy tickets was about an hour. They don’t sell tickets online for the same day entry. To avoid the long line purchase your tickets online the day before. The line to pickup tickets was minimal.

I've been a few times. It is an uphill walk to the castle from the train station, but I would not say it is strenuous. And as the previous poster mentioned it is also uphill once you enter the main gate. You could take it slowly and do some shopping on the way. There are a fair amount of steps involved once you get inside the castle also.

It is important to know which train station you will be arriving at. There are two, one much easier than the other. Which station in London will you be boarding your train at, please?

Take the train from Waterloo Station to Windsor & Eton Riverside (not the train from Paddington to Windsor & Eton Central).

I would not take my mother with a bad knee up the hill AND stand in line for an hour, so you could always take a cab from the station.

Once inside the castle, while there are stairs between floors and a bit of an incline from the upper yard to the lower yard of the castle, it would not be too onerous.

For me, a wonderful value added to a Windsor trip is to walk across the river about a quarter of a mile to Eton College. They have tours. But again, if mobility is a problem, consider a cab.

I'm curious why darrenblois suggests the Waterloo to Riverside route which is the slower and more expensive of the two possible as well giving the walk (or cab) up the hill from under. The Paddington to Central route does involve a simple connection at Slough but is cheaper and faster, and the Windsor and Eton Central station is just across the road from the castle. I'd hoped that we would hear back from georgiatraveler about what plans they had....

I agree with Nigel, the best train to take is from Paddington Station it’s a 35 train ride. You do have to change in Slough but that is simple. Once you get into Windsor, exit the train turn left walk up to the road, there is the castle across the street. Once at the street turn right and walk down to the corner, you will sees statue of Queen Victoria, cross there and walk up to the entrance gate.

Reason is direct train vs connection. Stations are about equal distance. Also depends where in London one is staying, as travel time to Waterloo vs Paddington is also a consideration. I guess I stay closer to Waterloo because every time I checked that connection was faster for me.

Actually I just checked again on Transport for London's Journey Planner, and many of the options (from either Paddington, Victoria or Waterloo) all involve train to Datchet, then the 10 bus to Windsor Castle.

Best advice, check Transport for London's Journey Planner (https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/) for precise instructions from wherever you are starting.

I would strongly caution against using the TfL site for locations that are outside of London. For example it doesn't seem to know at all that there is national rail between Slough and Windsor, or for that matter between Datchet and Windsor sending you instead on buses often with walks in between.

Yes, please don't try to use the TfL planner for areas beyond its knowledge. Sometimes dodgy at the best of times, to ask it to route you beyond its boundaries is likely to send it all doo-lally.

I speak of the options I actually know personally, know them very well through personal experience.

Sorry for the delay, I've been out all day. I appreciate everyone's advice. She does not use a cane it anything, just had knee replacement surgery a few years ago and still has some issues with steps on occasion. We're hoping it improves more as she continues to work on it as soon as she recovers from rotator cuff surgery. We haven't booked our accommodations yet so I can't answer that question in regards to which train station.

Just to verify something that someone said, if needed we could take a taxi to the entrance?

There are two train station in Windsor, Windsor-Eton Central (like I said in my other post get off the train turn right walk up to the road and there is the castle) which is a 5 minute walk to the castle, the other one Windsor Eton Riverside is an 8 minute walk. Windsor Eton Central is the best one to arrive at. Windsor Eton Riverside is a little farther will have to walk up the road with a slight incline. No need for a taxi, IMO that was silly to tell you to take a taxi. First, at the Central station in order to get a taxi you would have to walk up to the road, so when you get to the road all you have to do is cross the road to the castle. Riverside Station in across the street from the castle but on the side, so you just have to walk up the road to the front of the castle.
