Windsor Castle, Cotswold Rental Car Question

Hi all,

I am working on my trip with my young adult daughters for early-March. We would like to take a train from London to the Cotswolds and rent a car for a few days. None of us feels super comfortable driving in the UK (including my 26-year old who lives there now - haha!) Can someone tell me about the drive from Oxford and Cheltenham to Stow-on-the-Wold?

There is an Enterprise Car Rental in Oxford and Cheltenham. One thought was to take the 2-hour GWR train to Cheltenham, grab a car then make our way about 30 minutes to our hotel in Stow-on-the-Wold. It seems like it is mostly quiet backroads so easy to navigate. The train tickets are 78 euro/pp for a return.

The other idea is to take a GWR train to Oxford and rent a car from Enterprise there. It looks like almost an hour drive from there to Stow-on-the-Wold on bigger, busier highways. It is a much cheaper train ticket at 24 euro/pp for a return ticket and the train trip is less than an hour.

Last, is it possible for us to start or end this Cotswolds journey with a tour of Windsor Castle? Or is that adding too much on a "travel" day? We can save Windsor Castle for another visit to London.

Thanks for any thoughts!

is this a rejig of the summer trip to the Cotswolds for Sunday Roast, or another second trip?

Will you be in London the night before? What part of town?

I have a couple of thoughts, depending...

Another option to Oxford would be Didcot. A bit further away on the driving but Enterprise is located much more conveniently: it is further along on Station Road and pretty much in eyesight from the station. Three main options on driving routes with different balances between main and country roads.

Nigel, This a new trip. The last time we were in London was in 2019. My daughter moved there this past summer, so some of the questions I was asking were for her move, as I was going to accompany her but did not. Then we were supposed to go this past Christmas for 10 days but had some health issues.

We will be in London for several days before and after staying at my daughter's. She lives in the Holborn area.

Marco, is the Enterprise car rental far from the Oxford train station? Is it such that we could grab a taxi or uber easily? It looks like Didcot is another 20 minutes of driving to Stow on the Wold, right?

Speaking of the Cotswolds, will shops and restaurants be open the first week of March? I see that Sudeley Castle is closed.

Thanks for the clarification. Claudia from LA may chip in - she really enjoyed her stay in Holborn and knows of a couple of excellent things to do around there. I may be able to find her trip report.

Many tourist attractions don't open until the week of Easter except they are open for half term before that. There just isn't the trade for them and they don't have the staff before that time so they don't open. However all other necessities for life such as shops, hotels, etc., that people need are open year round.

in your situation I would suggest getting your car at Heathrow. Very easy to get to by underground or Elizabeth line from London. Holborn is a great area in general, I think that being based with your daughter there should work out well.

Holborn Underground is on the Central and Piccadilly Lines. To get to Heathrow you can either take the Piccadilly for about an hour and it goes all terminals from whence you can easily get to the car hire by shuttle. It would be the cheapest. You can go one stop on the Central Line to Tottenham Court Road and change there for the Elizabeth Line which will take you straight into the airport as well. Faster but more expensive.

From Heathrow the drive towards the Cotswolds and Stow on the Wold is very simple.
Simply out of the airport onto the M4 motorway to the M25 clockwise to the M40 and follow the M40 to Oxford changing there onto The A44 which will take you very close to Stow on the Wold. If the M25 is plugged up stay on the M4 until you get to junction 8/9 and onto the A404(M) marked for High Wycombe. The A404 is part motorway and then becomes dual carriageway "A" road, an easy shortcut to the M40. At the end in High Wycombe bear left onto the M40 as before.

The reason I don't recommend Oxford to collect a rental car at this time Is that there is huge construction around the railway bridge and around the station on the Botley Road which means that the road is blocked and you cannot get from the Oxford city side towards the Cotswolds side of the Botley Road. When you get your car at Oxford you have to go all the way on a long detour which involves heading into Oxford which is very unfriendly towards cars. And then back out again. I simply don't recommend it although it used to be my first choice to suggest. If Marco from Oxford sees this perhaps he has an update.

note - our Consumer Reports like organisation here, called Which?, has recently said that Enterprise is the most expensive car hire in the country . I have previously had good experiences with them but recently had a less than positive interaction with them near my house here in the countryside of Northamptonshire, north of London.

Didcot may be further to drive to Stow but it’s 15 minutes quicker to get to by train from Paddington and you don’t have all the traffic issues of getting out of Oxford.

I'm not sure if you are tied to renting from Enterprise...but I'll be arriving in Cheltenham by train from Liverpool, renting a car, and driving to Chipping Campden where we will stay for 9 days, enjoying all the Cotswolds have to offer. I found renting from Hertz to be less than half the price of the same size car if rented from Enterprise...might be worth checking out just to save a bit of money!

As Nigel explained, the main Enterprise office is the other side of the closed bridge on the Botley Road making it a very lengthy detour at present.

The car journey for Didcot is only a few minutes more on average traffic although you can't say on the day of course.
