Windsor Castle closed - how else should we spend a daylong layover in Windsor?

We were planning on visiting Windsor Castle during our 14 hour layover at Heathrow this week, but then we saw that it will be closed completely. Now we need a backup plan. How else should we spend that day?

If you still want to spend your layover in Windsor I think you could still have an enjoyable time.

Walk around Windsor, cross over the pedestrian bridge to quieter Eton, stroll along the high street browsing shop windows, and then soon enough you’ll be upon Eton College where if classes are in session you’ll see students walking between classes in their formal dress.

If the weather will be nice you could do a French Brothers river cruise on the Thames. Here’s a link to their 40-min cruise: https://www.frenchbrothers.co.uk/public-trips/windsor-40-minute-round-trip

Walk in Windsor Great Park http://www.windsorgreatpark.co.uk/en/activities/walking.

Have a nice meal (I enjoyed Cote Brasserie on the river).

And the castle is impressive and interesting from the outside even if it's closed.

Fourteen hours is a long layover but I hope your plans give you plenty of time to return to the airport, check into your next flight, go through security, and get to the gate. Plus you'll spend some time on arrival going through passport control, and of course getting to and from Windsor.

you can take the tube to london it's only 45 min. The castle is open, I was just there on 4/14. Even if the castle is closed, you can still enjoy a good walk around windsor and eton.
