Who's on Strike, What's on the schedule,

**UPDATE--7 Dec 4:30 PM GMT
--see Border Force below

The BBC has put together a chart of who is on strike on the days leading up to Christmas:

https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/1564E/production/_127903678_strikes_update_06_12a-nc.png.webp

After Christmas:

Rail Workers:

24 Dec--27 Dec

3-4 January

6-7 January

Border Force--the people who take care of immigration:

23 Dec - New Year's Eve

Border Force has voted to strike from 23 Dec to New Year's Eve. All major airports included. . The government said they will bring in the military, in uniform, to replace them. So, if you are arriving in the UK during that time, your passport may be checked by a soldier. They are getting five days of training. Regular Border Force officers get three weeks of training for checking passports.

Royal Mail

They have been striking and mail delivery is severly disrupted. If you plan to mail something to the UK, do it sooner than later if you want it delivered by Christmas.

I've been affected by the Royal Mail strike. Two parcels mailed last Wednesday from the same company in England to me in Scotland with their 24 hour service aren't even close to delivery. They are sitting in separate sorting centers.

Ambulance Workers:

Ambulance Workers in England and Wales are planning to strike on 21 Dec and 28 Dec.

This post , combined with one from Nigel earlier today, brought this to mind....

Gene Kranz:
Let's look at this thing from a... um, from a standpoint of status. What do we got on the spacecraft that's good?

Passport Control. I don’t think I have actually seen/talked to a border control agent at Heathrow the last few times I arrived there anyway. Love those e gates!

Everybody is going on strike. I suppose they could all get a pay rise and everybody will be back to square one regarding their pay compared to everyone else - unless they have a more stroppy union who can hold the country to ransome.

Nurses are also on strike on the 15th and 20th December.

It’s not about getting more pay relative to other workers. It’s because many of these jobs have seen below inflation pay rises for 10 years or more and with the huge increases in the cost of living at the moment it’s become unsustainable.

In the case of the railways, it’s also about terms of contract. For example, the government would like to see a 7 day week as part of the work rotes. At present, Sunday appears to not be part of the normal working week meaning that volunteers are sought who would like to work overtime. You can’t run a railway where voluntary labour is sought and if a major event - such as a football match takes place, volunteers are hard to come by - despite getting paid 50% more than the regular rate.

This latest batch of rail strikes will hit the Christmas holiday engineering works leading to the loss of millions of pounds which have to be paid to contractors who are unable to do the scheduled work. (They need a skeleton staff of signallers on duty for the works trains). Those millions of pounds will have to come from the government = the taxpayers.

I didn't post this to argue the pros and cons of the strikes. I posted it as information for anyone planning a trip to the UK in the next few weeks.
