Which London Airport for Departures?

Hi-after a week in London we will be flying to Dublin. We’re trying to book a flight but not sure which airport would be best. Originally we were going to book Ryanair out of Stansted but I’ve been reading horror stories about endless queues for check-in and security plus traffic backups. We are staying in the Westminster area towards the end of August and will use a car service (5 adults plus a one year old) to get to whichever airport we end up using. Any suggestions? Thanks

If you are taking a car service, London City will be the closest; it is also the easiest airport to transit through.

The next closest airport would be Heathrow. Gatwick would be a good choice if you took the train from Victoria (train only takes about 30 minutes), but it is a long drive.

Keep in mind for any of the airports the car service will likely take longer than using public transportation.

As stated, London City is the closest and smallest airport for your flights. It's very easy to manage. No real long walks. This would be my choice even thought the fares might be higher. But you have to consider the extra cost of the car service to further airports.

Gatwick would be next and from the Westminster area it's easy.

Then Heathrow.

Luton and Stansted and northwest and northeast of London and the furthest from your accomodations.

Don't just look at the cheap fares. You also have to consider all the add ons.

I would have said that getting to Gatwick by car from Westminster is not going to be quick. You have to go through South London with busy, slow roads and many, many sets of traffic lights. Heathrow would be quicker in my view since there are fast (ish) roads to the west of London much closer to Westminster than roads to the south.

You could try using Google maps to see how long it thinks a car will take from your hotel to the various airports.
