Hello all. Me and my husband are planning a trip to London and the Cotswolds late sept/early oct. He is going to fly fish at Coln St. Aldwyns, so we are wanting reqs for a place to stay close to there, but needs to have enough for me to do without a car for the day. I looked at Bibury, but seems that would be pretty limited on activities. Would Cirencester be best? We will have a car and are used to driving on the left, but he will take it to fish. A totally different idea would be to stay in a different area and we both drive there and I could do a walk. I would appreciate any suggestions! Ideally we would have had longer to plan this trip! Yikes!
Cirencester is a lovely town and full of interesting places to visit - the Corinium Museum, the Abbey and the surrounding grounds with walks along the river and the towns Roman walls, the Roman amphitheatre, interesting architecture spanning centuries, interesting shops etc. Easy to spend a day or two there exploring. Also a good base to get to other areas of the Cotswolds.
Thank you, Linda! Do you have any recommendations for accommodations? Thanks again:)
Are you going to be a named driver?- as while your husband is fishing you could possibly use the car to go exploring.
Looking at a map of the area leads me to Arlington Row in Bibury, and this website gives more information about the village of Bibury, including a 6 mile circular walk.- https://visitthecotswolds.uk/blog/why-visit-the-bibury-cotswolds/ (including 2 places to stay and a cottage owned by the National Trust- which probably gets booked up aeons in advance.)
The map shows a garden at nearby Barnsley (there is a much better known Barnsley in South Yorkshire)- but that turns out to only be open a few days a year, so no use to you.
Thanks for the info. I am not going to be listed as a driver. But you mentioning gardens makes me realize I should do a search for public gardens in the area to help me narrow down my options. I can always spend hours in any garden, haha.
What about Buscot and/or Coleshill Parks- https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/oxfordshire-buckinghamshire-berkshire/buscot-and-coleshill-estates/things-to-do-at-the-buscot-and-coleshill-estates
Coleshill in particular looks a very interesting place, But Buscot has access to the River Thames- a totally different river in it's upper reaches than even at Oxford.
About 11 or 12 miles away from Coln St Aldwyn, so your husband could drop you off before going fishing. From Buscot you could walk along the Thames Path into Lechlade. If you could find availability that might be a good place to stay.
Thanks again for the suggestions! I appreciate the great info!
