We are planning a trip to St. Ives in September and will be traveling by train. We will be exploring the Cornwall area getting around by train and bus. We do not want to rent a car. We are looking for suggestions of places to stay in the St. Ives and want to stay near the train station for easy access with luggage. Any suggestions?
What kind of place are you looking for? Hotel? Flat? Price range? Numbers of people?
I’ve not stayed here, but I’ve always thought the Pedn Olva looks lovely.
If you zoom in on Google maps, a number appear close to the train station. You just need to compare to see if any suites your need. I just passed through St. Ives, so can’t recommend any place.
I believe there are steps between street level and the (lower) train station. Check on Google Maps to be sure, so you can be prepared.
I can't respond to where to stay, but just FYI, you will need to plan out what you want to do very carefully and look at the time it takes to travel by bus/train. I spent a week in Cornwall and I think it would have been very time consuming to travel by bus or train in this particular area. It's possible but I think you will be limited in your options, especially if you want to travel further south in Cornwall.
Yes, it's important to investigate transportation links carefully before finalizing your itinerary.
A further tip: Make dinner reservations (I don't know whether you can get by without them for lunch). If you do not reserve, you may have a very difficult time finding a place that can seat you. I hope it will not be as tight in September as it was during my trip, but I wouldn't count on it.
Thanks all. Will be revising plans.
Hi, when I was on the Rick Steves' Villages of Southern England tour in May of 2016, we stayed at the Hotel Penzance in the town of Penzance, and took the train from Penzance to St. Ives as a side trip. The Hotel is close to the train station. I had a remarkable view of St. Michael's Mount from my room, which was more like a B&B room than hotel. Nice restaurant and bar too.
