My Husband and I will be in Durham for one night in June. We will be coming in by train from York then off to Edinburgh. I am looking for a place to stay. I'm all about location to the most interesting sites. Hotel or B&B both work. Mid to Upper price work but if there is a quaint place that is less expensive that works too. I'm all about the location and being in a nicer more convenient area.
For your requests for York, Durham and Glasgow, how do you define "mid to upper price" ?
Depending on the city (meaning some cities the hotel rates are cheaper than others) I would say $150-$275. I would not object to $375 if it's in a great location. We love the old town areas. I will always pay more for a better more location in a nice area by the sites. It always seems like if you are right by a train station the area is sketchy. I could be wrong.
My example if you have been there is when we are in NY City I like to stay in Time Square.
We visited Durham in October and loved it. We stayed two nights at the

We stayed mainly in B&Bs on our four week driving tour, but picked the Mariott, due to great prices and location. The hotel is very close to the historic downtown area. Also, it has free parking. The people at the hotel are great. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.
Don’t miss the Ye Olde Elm Tree Pub nor a treat from the 9 Alters Bakery. A stroll along the river path is most enjoyable. Lovely place Durham. Cathedral is gorgeous.
Thank you for all the responses.
geovagriffith - seeing you did a 4 week driving trip. I am also looking for a place in York, and Edinburgh and Glasgow Scotland. Any recommendations?
Here is my trip review, also our cruise home. Lots of details of tours, hotels, B&Bs.

Thank you!
My husband and I stayed one night at Victorian BB in Durham. It is at bottom of very steep hill from train station. Our room was lovely. In Scotland we rented an apartment at a World Heritage site on River Leith. PM me if you would like more information.
Several years ago we stayed four nights in the Radisson Blu hotel in Durham, on the river bank a short walk north of the center. It was convenient for sightseeing, a pleasant location, and very comfortable -- but not at all "quaint." It's on the same side of the river as the station, probably a short taxi ride away, but we were driving.
In York we stayed three nights at the Abbey Guest House, a B&B facing the river and a short pleasant walk to most of the sights in the center. It was comfortable and the breakfast was good. I believe its ownership has changed since our visit, so you might want to check it out further.
We loved both Durham and York. If you have time and can connect by train (via Newcastle?), there's a bus that runs along Hadrian's Wall and stops at various Roman sites and English towns along the way. Well worth a day's exploring if you can.
We stayed at the Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County last August. We loved our stay. The place could use some updating but it was clean and quiet.. It is very close to the old part of town, the Cathedral, and the River Wear. Keep in mind Durham is a college town too, while we loved it there, the Marriott seemed a little more isolated from the large groups bar hopping through the old part of town.
