Where to go after London

We will be in London from July 4 to July 6 or 7. Our flight home is from Manchester on July 9. Where would be a good place to spend a day or two in between London and Manchester?

Much depends on timing and means of transportation but if you are travelling by train. I would visit York. There are plenty of trains and the trip takes 2 hours. There is also a direct train from York to Manchester airport which takes under 2 hours. If you had an early flight on the 9th you could spend the day in York, take an evening train to Manchester airport and stay at an airport hotel. York is a compact town with the station, plenty of hotels\b&bs, city walls, cathedral, and half a dozen museums within walking distance. There is also a great walking tour.

We are open to different things. We like city things such as museums as well as hikes in the country.

We will be traveling by train as I'm trying to avoid getting a car on this trip. York sounds like a possibility.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Emma's right about Chester, a wonderful city and good base for a foray into north Wales. Another candidate would be Oxford, with its colleges and museums, and a potential day trip into the Cotswolds or Bath.

I love York also, good suggestion. However Stratford on Avon is also wonderful, visit Shakespear's home and attend a performance of Shakespeare at the great Royal Shakespeare theater.

WIndsor. Easy to get to, shops and restaurants are cheap, small town feel, giant castle right in the neighborhood. Very near Heathrow too, so easy for right before flying. Travelodge was good, just be sure you know which train station is the one right next to it, not the Riverside one across town. There are also nice B&Bs, Premier Inn and others in Slough, right next door.
