Hello all - I will be visiting Winchester next month as a day trip from London, and would love a restaurant recommendation for dinner. I'm hoping to enjoy Evensong at Winchester Cathedral, which looks like it is at 5:30 pm. My train back to London leaves at 8:20 pm. Is there somewhere that would be ideal for that location and timeframe? I eat virtually anything so am not picky about the type of food. Thank you!
I am no help. I spent 3 nights in Winchester in Nov 2022, and went to evensong twice. I loved my stay and loved evensong, but honestly I have no idea what I ate, so it was obviously not memorable, except for the pub one night that was a bit too loud and crowded for me. Food was fine but I wouldn’t repeat. I don’t remember there being much by the train station either.
I enjoyed dinner at Rick Steins. You need a reservation.
I also had a meal at The Wykeham Arms. It is a historic pub. I had Sunday roast which I thought was average. I don’t know what their dinner menu is like.
It might be too casual for what you're looking for but it's only a 2 of minute walk from the Cathedral. https://stablepizza.com/winchester/ the pizza was good but the ciders were the highlight.
Oh, thank you, Allan! I DID eat there but you are right - it was the cider that made it special. I had a cider flight and definitely had my favorites. It was a cute little place, too. I had totally forgotten!
Off to write this down so I don’t forget again. I may need a return next month.
We dined at the amazing historic pub, The Wykehman Arms.
