Whatsapp vs Viber

i use whatsapp, it does what it says it will do. It is fast and reliable. A downside is that the person on the other end can see when you are typing.

I have viber installed but have never had a cause to use it.

And I do the opposite of Nigel. I have both apps installed but I use Viber. Works great for me to send texts back to the US as well as here in the UK.

I used whatsapp from Europe (England, Italy and Switzerland) all summer last year. Worked great! The only downside when compared to regular texting is that you have to set your phone to alert you when you receive a text through whatsapp. Otherwise you have to keep opening up the app to check if someone has texted you. I found that to be a positive thing though because I hate when my phone dings to let me know I have a text. I could leave it alone if I didn't want to be bothered and check it when I wanted to. It was nice to be able to send both texts and pics for free!

We have used Viber with success to send free texts, pictures, and make calls from Europe to the US. Your contacts must also be signed up on Viber. There were some times on our last trip that the connection was not available, but was eventually restored.
