What to do in Prestbury area?

We are traveling to a wedding in Prestbury -- flying into Manchester. We are wondering what to do if we spent the first night in Manchester - are there other destinations in Manchester? We also wondered what to do near Prestbury (we will have one full day there) and if so is renting a car the best way to go? We would wondered about castles, abbeys, or any other historical structures in the area.

Do you mean Prestbury near Cheltenham with the famous Gold Cup racecourse at the foot of Cleeve Hill in the Cotswolds (about which I could talk for days having grown up there)

or

Prestbury in Cheshire, about which I know little other than the beauty of the Cheshire countryside?

Close by is Lyme Park, house and gardens open to public..
Its easy to train to Buxton, thier might be something on at the lovely opera house.
If you hire a car the Peak National Park is only about 30mins from airport.
Not that impressive a building but setting is,the castle at Castleton.

I would drive through the Peak District Park to Chatsworth House, then circle back on a different road. Here's a map from the tourist office. You'll probably pay about the same to rent a car for one or two days (with advance booking) as for three days.
