What to do between Manchester & London

I am having trouble finding some areas of interest to explore between these two cities. I have 3 days and 3 nights free before I need to be back at Heathrow to return home and I will have a car hire. I have already been to Norwich, Birmingham, Oxford, Salisbury, the Cotswolds and Wye Valley.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Liverpool? Or are you looking for something besides a city?

I will be in Manchester for 6 days so will be doing day trips to Liverpool, Leeds, the Peak district, and (possibly) York. Ideally looking for something further south - either city or something more outdoors-y is fine. Originally I had planned to go up to Edinburgh and fly back to London, but unfortunately there are no flights that are convenient for that on the day I need.

I would stay in Rutland. There are some very pretty historical towns such as Oakham and Uppingham and Stamford is only 10 miles away (but in Lincolnshire not Rutland).

If you feel energetic, you can hire a bike and cycle round Rutland Water (about 12 miles and very easy going) or if you are there May to September, take a boat ride on the Rutland Belle (weekends only late March and April). Lots of smaller pretty stone villages and great tea shops!

The museum in Oakham is worth a visit plus see the Castle there - free entry and known for its collection of horse shoes (more interesting than it sounds as many have been given by royalty going back hundreds of years).
