My daughter will be teaching in Sheffield, UK during the fall and I'd like to visit her. Would like to know the most economical way to get to Sheffield along with best rail pass for her for her stay.
Thanks
Cheapest (but almost certainly by far slowest) from London to Sheffield will likely be National Express coach (cumfy bus). Or must you use train?
About her - it is difficult to say what is "best" knowing zero about how she intends to use it. Is she on this Forum?
Does she qualify for any railcards? Is she over 60? Under 25? Regularly traveling with at least one child? Regularly traveling with the same one other person?
Fly to Manchester instead and take the train from there if you can.
Sheffield is also served from St Pancras station by East Midland Trains - it is usually their northernmost destination.
If she's considering a BritRail pass for weekend travel around the country, it can cover a certain number of days within 2 months. For instance, 8 travel days ($525 for adults 26 and older = 4 weekend roundtrips or 15 travel days ($795 for adults) = 7.5 weekend roundtrips within 2 months. Once she has lived in the UK for 6 months, then her eligibility for BritRail passes changes. There are no BritRail pass discounts for the two of you traveling together, only for 3 or more people. With a pass, free, optional seat assignments are available up to a day ahead, or you can hop any daytime train and find a seat.
