What do I need to rent a vehicle in the UK?

Hello all!

I am traveling to the UK for the first time for 2 weeks. I will be flying into Heathrow, taking the coach to Bath -- and then renting a vehicle for the duration of the trip. I have already booked the car rental through Enterprise.

My questions is, since I am an US Citizen, is there anything additional that I need besides a valid US Drivers License and Passport to be able to rent and operate a vehicle in the UK (England / Wales)?

Thank you in advance!

Probably a credit card. And a sense of adventure.

A credit card. If you have one that offers full insurance coverage for rental cars you'll save money! I just rented a car through Enterprise in the UK over Christmas and it was very easy.

CZ,

In addition to the items mentioned so far, I'd recommend a GPS (Sat Nav) as well. You can use a smartphone if you have a data plan. I've found that to be very helpful when driving in the U.K.

No one has mentioned is the International Driving Permit. I simply do not know if it is needed. Does anyone know with certainty?

I do know with certainty - US driver license in date, UK, no IDP.

Thanks Nigel. A definitive answer from one who lives there should answer that question for many before they have to ask.

What do I need: To know the traffic laws and road signs. Plus a valid licence.
