What area in London do I stay in?

I will be travelling to England in late July. My 12 year old son and I will be staying in London for three nights and I am not sure of what area I should stay in(or hotel). On our trip last summer we stayed at the Marriott County Hotel (hotel stay was a gift - I can't afford that price). Though it was convenient to the sights, I did not like the fact that there were not a lot of restaurants nearby. We plan on seeing the area around St Pauls as well as Kensington. I am looking for a hotel that is clean, safe, and quiet (I don't really need much in terms of amenities). I would like an area that has restaurants as well as being able to walk around in the evening. I don't care for an area that has an active nightlight (bars/nightclubs). Do any of you have any suggestions on which area would work for me? My budget is between $200-$300 (135-200 British Pounds) a night. I must also add that I really enjoy all the comments and suggestions that this group gives. They are all very informative.

I never thought we'd do other than South Kensington until our most recent trip where for various reasons we ended in Pimlico. Really liked that - easy access to transport (Victoria train/underground and useful bus lines), grocery stores restaurants.

While you could get far more for your budget, we found the Celtic to be a great location. A block from the Russell Square tube station, a few blocks from the British Museum. We are walkers, so we walked to St. Paul's, walked back from Kensington, and to/from the Trafalgar Square area many times. It is in the middle of much of what you want to do, I would say. I was not impressed with the breakfast, but it was clean, safe and quiet. And I seem to recall many restaurants near by. You might find another hotel more to your liking in that same area.

We just stayed at Go Native Monument and it was nice as they had a full kitchen quite area and near the tube and places to eat.
