In looking at a RS Best of England tour in September of next year, I notice that the tour states “tour St Paul’s cathedral in lieu of Westminster Abbey”. Is the Abbey closed, is this for some upkeep?
If you look at the schedule of tours, it says this for every tour that runs on a Tuesday to Monday. It is probably just be an issue with the opening times on the day of the week that the tour would normally do this visit.
I am speculating but they may be anticipating (preparing for the worst?) for any train or traffic delays or even train strikes. When I took this tour years ago, I believe we were given a short period of time to have lunch once we landed in London (our guide had recommended that we get sandwiches the day before and pack it for lunch on the bus) before we headed to Westminster Abbey for a tour. It was definitely a rushed day.
Thanks for informative answers!
If you choose a tour date where this happens, it ends on a Monday, which happens to be a day that London Walks offers the Westminster Abbey guided tour (I enjoyed it). Pre-registration required. https://www.walks.com/our-walks/westminster-abbey-tour/
