Wells - where to stay

Hello England travelers and residents,

Has anyone stayed at a place they loved in Wells, in the last couple years? Looking for recommendations, non luxury, inn, pub, small hotel, self-catering or B&B. Close to Cathedral and/or city centre. Thanks so much!

I thought I'd post in case someone wants a place in Wells but doesn't need a city centre/cathedral location.

We are returning to our favorite hotel---Beryl Country House---for the 3rd time this December. It is not close to the Cathedral. (about 26 minute walk, and uphill returning:( Parking is available.

They do have a self-catering cottage but I don't know what it's like. We loved our room in the house.

The Rick Steves England guidebook recommends the Swan Hotel, a Best Western Plus facing the cathedral with 53 rooms. Prices vary for their Tudor-style rooms, some with four-poster beds. It has a pub, and they also rent five self-catering apartments in the village - www.swanhotelwells.co.uk . Have not personally stayed with them, so can’t offer further information.

His guidebook also lists Middle Farm Cottage, a “small and cozy B&B,” in the village of Dinder, 2.5 miles outside of Wells. If that’s not too far away, search for Middle Farm Cottage at www.sawdays.co.uk .

I have stayed at the Crown, very old, quite well maintained, decent breakfast, very central and near cathedral.

Thanks so much for the replies.

LInC I had wondered about the Crown. Good to get a positive review of it.

CanAmCherie We go carless so we definitely need city centre.

Cyn Apparently, the Swan Hotel is no longer Best Western (which is too bad because we have points with BW) but will look into their self-catering units. Thanks again

Hi Katie -

We stayed at the Swan Inn in Wells this past August while walking the Mendip Way. Booking made for us in this instance, because they booked our accommodation all along the route, by Encounter Walking Holidays.

It was excellent, although we didn’t eat there in the evening. We lucked out with our room, a ‘four poster’ bed room on the front of the hotel looking directly across to the stunning view of the cathedral. Given that it was a really hot spell I think we were batting above our average as usually weary, and a bit sweaty, hikers, staying just the one night, don’t tend to be so fortunate!

Would recommend!

Ian

P.S. The Swan is now part of a group called The Coaching Inn Group that have a few hotels dotted across the country.

My home city!

Consider the Crown as well as the Swan, it's a bit pricier but nothing compared to the cost of London or Bath. The Crown also has better food imo.

Bishops Palace next to the Cathedral itself is also worth exploring, particularly if the weather is pleasant.

The Mendip Hill have over 440km of public footpaths, and exploring them is an absolute treat, however public transport is essentially non existent so you'll need to plan well.

Thanks so much for the recommendations. Very helpful! And thanks for the head's up about public transportation. I may have to rethink some things.
