Hi Everyone:
I flew back home on Oct 31 from Terminal 4 at Heathrow via West Jet to Calgary then 30 minute flight home to Edmonton, and was surprised by no boarding or plane section boarding announcements at the Heathrow gate where we boarded. I was way at the back, sitting and reading a book. I always found it odd that some people will start lining up even an hour before boarding. Everyone complains about flying, so why be in a rush to get on the plane so you can make your flight time in a small seat on the plane even longer.
Anyway, the line moved at bit here and there but I thought, well, they will eventually call our section to start boarding. But silence. Eventually I looked up from my book and saw about 10 people left, so I jumped up at quickly made my way up to the boarding entrance, and was one of the last people on the plane. I would have thought that if the PA system were broken someone would have a least walked through the section with a loud voice telling people it's time to start boarding. When I asked a stewardess on board she said they didn't do the boarding, that was done by airport staff, so she didn't know what process they used.
I make lots of blunders when traveling, and always make a note and try to learn from them, so I guess this was another learning situation. You can't trust the people at the gate to announce general boarding or plane section boarding, so stay near the front and keep your eyes open.
