Watford to Hampton Court

Hi Guys, we are visitors from Australia & have a seniors card/oyster card. We want to visit Hampton court & are getting confused with costs of travel. Is it cheaper to use oyster card for the whole journey or purchase a South Western Rail ticket for travel from Clapham junction to Hampton Court? Looking on line we can purchase a return ticket for 2 for $15.60 from Clapham to HCP. Any advise would help:)

You can do the whole journey one way off-peak for only £2.70 with an Oyster Card if you do a convoluted skirting round West London route via Willesden Junction, Richmond and New Malden. It will however take somewhat longer! If you do this, make sure you touch on the pink card reader at Willesden Junction and Richmond.

An off-peak return via Clapham Junction from Watford Junction is £11.20.

Hi Marco thank you for the quick response. Would it make much difference if we traveled on a Sunday?

I guess the thing to decide on for you is the balance between quickness, convenience, cheapness and frequency. The one-change route via Clapham Jct has the first 2 but is less good on the others. Going the cheap route will take the best part of 4.5 hours round trip and might be more on a Sunday if the changes are poorer.

Do you mean Sunday, tomorrow,? Be aware of the strike on South West trains. Check before travel.

The Southern train line between Watford Junction and Clapham Junction is slow and that route is one of the very first to have cancellations if there is any problem. Also If there are any staffing problems at the depot, sometimes on Sundays there could be a Driver shortage, again that route is one of the first to go. And it is at best hourly.
