Is it necessary to book a guided tour of this museum or is it something that can be done thoroughly on your own?
I wouldn’t bother with a guided tour. The audio guide is good, and contains personal stories from people who worked in the war rooms. Most of your time will be spent in the excellent Churchill Museum, which is something you’ll want to experience at your own pace.
I did not use a guide nor found it necessary.
Hi pdforeman, the Churchill War Rooms were very well signed and we did it on our own. It was very interesting and we spent more time there than we expected (2+ hours). Recommend that you purchase tickets in advance. We walked right in but the line for those without tickets was really long.
Do buy in advance online the timed entry tickets. When you arrive at the museum for your time slot, there are 2 lines - the very long one is for folks without tickets, and the short one is for you. I bought the tickets from home, printed them out. This was one of the highlights of London for me.
