Wanderlust folk, please help me fill in the blanks!

Traveling to England in July. Arrive on a Saturday and leave 10 days later on a Tuesday. Probably not much exploring the day we arrive or leave. This leaves real exploring Sunday through Monday of the following week. Arriving and flying out of London.

Tickets already purchased for Buckingham Palace royal day out on the first Monday afternoon and to see Hamilton that evening. Those two are solid. Reservations are made, but can be cancelled for Cotswolds the following Saturday and Sunday night's with day Cotswolds tour on Sunday. Planned on coming back to London on Monday to fly out the next day.

Was thinking of staying in London Saturday through Wednesday night, then heading West. In London, my must see places are the Tower, Westminster, Saint Paul's, British library, War rooms. Ideally, the British Museum too. And if there was a way to sneak in some sort of sporting or other local event, that would be amazing (London or otherwise)!

Had planned on Bath, possibly Oxford. Is Bath worth two nights? Is Oxford worth one? Or I could do one night in Bath and two in Cotswolds. I'd probably want a day trip out of London one of the days somewhere else. Windsor maybe?

Was not planning on driving, so relying on transport and tours. Thanks for and advice or tips!

I love Bath so I'll say yes, I can find more than enough for 2 nights which is only 1 full day. Over the last few years, I've stayed in Bath from 3-5 nights and fill my days there. I'd be sure to look at transportation links between Bath and the Cotswolds before you make a decision. I've not gone between the 2 except on a tour.

There are day trips via MadMax from Bath thru the Cotswolds. I did one last June and it was enjoyable. I've also stayed in the Cotswolds longer on the Rick Steves Best of England tour so had seen some of the other areas. To me Bath is more interesting than the Cotswolds but that is just my opinion.

When you say "Westminster" do you mean Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament or the general area known as Westminster? You can probably combine that on the day you do the Churchill War Rooms. Get advance tickets for the War Rooms.

You can combine the Tower of London and St Pauls on the same day. Rick has an audio tour that "almost" goes between the 2!

British Museum and British Library (much smaller for the part you can visit) can be done on the same day. I'd do the Library first and see the exhibition there, then head over to the British Museum.

I found Oxford a lot more interesting than Bath, though I did like the two Bath museums I visited. I just found Bath too visually same-y, and I wasn't interested in the Roman Baths. I certainly wouldn't want to spend two nights there unless I was takinf a day-trip, such as to,the Cotswolds.

GoCotswolds runs van tours from Moreton-in-Marsh, which is a quick and easy train ride from Oxford. I was very happy with my tour. I'm not much of a bus-tour person, but traveling through the Cotswolds via public transportation is a rather slow process. The tour allowed me to see quite a few of the villages in a single day. if you're not planning something like viilage-to-village hiking, how many different villages of thatched cottages do you need to see? I thought one day was enough during a single trip to England.

Pam, I should have clarified Abbey.

Acraven, the tour I have reserved us through GoCotswolds, so that's good to hear. Was Oxford worth a night to see it?

Appreciate the help!

I liked Bath and the Roman baths were probably my favorite thing in Bath, but I was there early on a cold March morning so there was steam rising up from the pool which made things more mysterious. Other than that, I think one day is fine. Oxford again is very touristy but two night would be fine.

IMO, London is worth 5 to 6 days at least, given how far apart things are-there's not really a central core like other European cities and having to stand in line when you get to the attraction. Plus there is so much to see. There are parks a whole host of museums, London Walks, etc. So if you are doing the Bath/Oxford trips, I wouldn't do any more day trips but do a London Walks Hampstead or Highgate tour or even Greenwich.

London Walks provides all kinds of guided walks in London, also day trips to places like Oxford, Bath, and the Cotswolds. I haven't taken one of their day trips, but their in-London walks are very good and I'm sure the out-of-London trips are too.

I think your original plan is a good one, be careful not to try to "see everything" in the limited time you have. Day trips are fine but each one uses up time getting there and back, and time isn't something you can spare a lot of.
