Walks in the Cotswolds

My husband and I are planning a trip to the Cotswolds for about 8 days in May. Our primary purpose is to walk. We will not be doing long distance walks but are planning a walk each day (rain permitting). Does anyone know a place where it's best to home base? Also, we will have a car. Is there a village with a grocery store, gas station etc.? It seems like Chipping Camden might be the best choice. If anyone has walked this area (Stow, Broadway etc.) tell me that there are some flat circular walks! Uphill is for days passed. Thanks so much.

The problem is that Stow on the Wold - where as I learned as a boy "The Wind Blows Cold" in some awful but true doggerel - and Broadway are both on a hill. Broadway part way up and Stow on the top, and both surrounded by hills.

That primarily what the Cotswolds is. Lots of hills. Beautiful. Villages and towns not bad, but for me it is the hills.

Burford has nice walks along the river but the town itself if on a steep hill (river at the bottom, near the church).

Chipping Campden is mostly flat in the village, but as soon as you turn off the road you are either down or up. Down Sheep Street towards Hidcote is beautiful, but level it is not. You are close to the Edge and some of the villages off the Edge are pretty flat, but off the escarpment isn't really the Cotswolds.

Cirencester is pretty flat as is Broadway EDIT: sorry - meant Bourton on the Water END EDIT and the Rissingtons. The Slaughters and the Swells, not. Blockley not.

Cheapest automobile fuel is at a supermarket, but all fuel is expensive in the Cotswolds.

Unfortunately the clue is in the title as ‘wold’ means a range of hills in Olde Englysh! I think it’s the rolling hills and vistas that attracts people to walk in the Cotswolds. (Never been so not entirely sure, as the disneyfication puts me off!).

What do your consider a long distance walk?

I am 71 and do a 3.2 mile walk every other day.

A long walk for me would be 5 or 6 miles.

We stayed in Chipping Campden for six nights and used it as a base to visit the Cotswolds, Oxford, Blenheim Palace, Stratford Upon Avon and more.
Recommend the Volunteer Inn. It has the best pub in town and a great Indian Restaurant. The fare is very reasonable and people are friendly.

Don't miss the great little village of Broad Campden. It is walking distance from Chipping Campden. Broad Campden full of thatched rood homes and buildings.

A plan we used in the Cotswolds was find places we wanted to visit and sites we wanted to see and drive there. You can get your walk in by walking about the town or estate you are visiting. The thing about driving is that if you happen upon a place you can stay there as long as it is of interest to you and then move on...instead of being worn out and wet from walking and trying to catch a bus back. Look on the www.nationaltrust.org.uk site for info on Overseas Visitor Touring Pass.

We have visited the Cotswolds every year for the past 5 years. We usually book a cottage in Blockley. Charming place with a small grocery and a fabulous little restaurant attached to store.
Gas is available within about 5 minutes drive.
We did various walks from there last year. Beautiful.
Broadway is another village that is very charming and has everything you could possibly need. I think there was a Tescos there and many good restaurants. We did a walk to Broadway tower from there. It would also be a great base.
Chipping Camden is nice but we prefer Blockley and Broadway.

I meant to say in my previous post we are 69 years old and don’t do long uphill walks either. There are plenty of easier walks around Blockley and Broadway.

You might want to check out the options offered by HF Holidays, a British company that offers walking trips, guided and self-guided, while staying at one of their country houses. We took one of their international discovery tours based at Lake Bled last year following the RS Eastern Europe tour. Liked the experience and traveling with a small group of Brits was fun.
