Transport for London have added some info about walking times between London tube stations, and when it is quicker to walk. The info is here: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/walking/
It also shows some recommended self-guided walks. See here: https://tfl.gov.uk/campaign/see-the-sights
Brilliant idea. I'm glad they added this feature. If people spend all of their time getting around underground they have no real idea how far apart things really are. Some time ago there was a discussion about the Tube map and someone posted a link to a more true to scale map. It was quite revealing. Thanks for the update about the TFL site.
EDIT: Here's a link to a more to scale map: http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03443/London-Connections_3443046a.jpg
Commuters stampede between Paddington Station and Lancaster Tube station in the mornings. It's a 5-10 minute not unpleasant walk. With a map of the city center you can find stations that are close together. Some are only a couple hundred yards apart.
Thanks for the info. Very helpful when researching tube locations of London Walks I want to take in March.
Especially helpful for travelers with a disability who have trouble walking for long distances.
Chris, thanks for the info. Just added the routes/maps link for my London trip I am planning on in the next year and a half.
A couple of notes on what the link to the TfL site gets you: the "walking map" gives you distances between adjacent stations on the same line, which is less useful than knowing about stations on different lines that is very close together. The "journeys that could be quicker to walk" document gives those as a list rather than map, but there are some odd examples that seem designed to guide people away from busier stations (eg Camden Town is closer to Camden Road than Mornington Crescent, and Warren Street is MUCH closer to Euston Square than Goodge Street is).
Oh thank you! What a super resource! Nice one!
