I'm arriving in Paddington Station in the morning and my hotel check in isn't until noon. It's near Westminster Abbey. Since I have time to wander, is that too much of a walk through Hyde Park? I'm in good health for my age (60's) and don't mind a decent walk, but not if it will take me 2 hours. Thanks!
Where will your luggage be? Have you contacted your hotel to see if they have a luggage storage?
I stay near Paddington Station when in London. The walk is easy depending how far you wish to stroll.
I've done it and a few years older than you. I'd head to the Italian Gardens which is a 15 minute walk.
You could also walk as far Parliment Square which is 2.5 miles and takes about an 75 minutes at an easy pace.
Arent you getting your Oyster Card at Paddington Station? Why not use it and take the tube to Westminster?
You see more by walking! And I'll have just a back pack. But yes, 2 hours may be a little too much. Thanks!
Oh I agree you see more by walking. That's all I do while I'm in London
However, you said you didn't wish to do so if it took 2 hours. So take the 15 minute stroll to the lovely Italian Gardens in Hyde Park and decide where you wish to wander from there. The entrance is across the road from the Lancaster Gate tube station.
Lastly, if you use Google Maps you can plan your route.
Ah, maybe I'm older than I thought! I misread 2.5 miles for 2.5 hours. A 75 minute walk sounds perfect to me, especially through Hyde Park and then St. James. Thanks again.
The route will be Hyde Park, Green Park and then St James. You can see the Palace enroute to Westminster.
Thank you! Looking a google maps right now and that looks like a perfect way to spend that morning.
Enjoy the stroll, sights and sounds.
Yes this is a pleasant enough walk if you cut through the parks and avoid as much as possible the main roads although there isn't much you can do with Hyde Park corner.
Isn't there a subway at Hyde Park Corner?
Otherwise, be very careful there.
There is a subway (walking underpass, not a train) from Hyde Park to the Wellington Arch roundabout, and a good old pedestrian crossing from Wellington Arch roundabout into Green Park, so crossing is easy enough. I think Marco was meaning it's all park on the walk, except for Hyde Park Corner where roads are unavoidable. Done that walk many times, lovely if the weather is with you. Maybe have a backup plan, as it could easily be pouring down.
Keep your eyes open at the pedestrian crossing. I have seen traffic lights with walkers or bikers many places, but this is the only place I have seen a traffic light with horse and rider.

Indeed so.
I used to do that walk on occasion when I was working in Westminster. Sometimes enforced (strike etc) and sometimes by choice.
This might be of interest to you on your walk. I came across this info while in London last week. It helps you plot a walking route that reduces your exposure to air pollution.

Thank you, everyone! I've got about 3 hours to kill before hotel check in time, so this sounds perfect. Nice, slow walk through the park, maybe grab breakfast, and take my time.
And yes, all bets are off it it's raining!
If you wanna grab something on the way... There is a restaurant in St. James Park called 'Inn the park'... It's a bit pretentious being owned by a 'famous' restauranteur, but the food is good if not cheap... A posh full English maybe?
Ironically i go there for American buttermilk pancakes and bacon with maple syrup... Not as good as the real thing i'm sure, but i totally enjoy them.
Are you planning to carry your luggage on this walk? While it is certainly a doable walk, I wouldn't want to do it with a suitcase.
Even if you can't check in, most hotels will let you leave your luggage until check in time.
I travel light. Just a regular back-pack and maybe a small carrier with wheels. So I won't be lugging a big suitcase.
