Visiting Stonehenge

I am organizing a trip for a group of eight. We will be centered in London and then taking the train to Scotland. While in London we want to do a side trip to Stonehenge early in the morning or late in the evening so that we can go into the ring. I know how to get permission to go into the ring but I’m looking for transportation. Would it be better to plan a small bash out and back in one day or two go and spend the night? Or is there another alternative?

As a solo traveler I definitely spend the night in Salisbury but not sure about moving a group of 8. How many nights are you in London? And is this a "must do" for someone on your trip?

You can also see neolithic stones in Scotland, depending on where your itinerary takes you there.

Here is a link to an interesting site with locations of stones all over UK in case one of those sites will be easier to work in.

I'm not trying to talk you out of Stonehenge as it's an amazing sight I visit nearly every trip to England BUT I have time (usually spend 3 nights in Salisbury) and am just moving myself not a group.

Hi John -

I think if you were doing the ‘Stonehenge from London in a day’ option, you would have time to visit the other nearby Neolithic sites, chief among them being Avebury which for sheer size knocks the surprisingly small Stonehenge for six.

I did a quick internet search and came up with this:

https://www.stonehengetours.com/private-access/stonehenge-sunset-access-trip

It seems to fit your requirements and you get to see the other good sites into the bargain. However - Caveat emptor! I just found this site via Google and have never personally used them, ever. I post the link merely as an illustration of what I think might make a decent trip. Other tours are available and I would urge you to do your own research to see if there are any that better suit you and/or save you money!

Hope you get fixed up - it’s a marvellous part of the country!

While Stonehenge is renowned and garners a visit, I would definitely include Avebury Stone Circle if the opportunity permits. The two sites (both World Heritage) are vastly different. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the Avebury experience.

So, I dont know if this helps but I found a page on how to get to Stonehenge for free from London. Although its hard, there are routes and prices in the page to help you:

Personally, I would look at hiring a minibus between you all, there are definitely providers out there that can help with this. I dont think you need to spend the night there to be honest, there is Holiday Inn nearby but its only just over an hours drive from London and you cant see the stones from the hotel.

I am not going to click on a link from a first time poster above.

Another vote for including Avebury, which I prefer to Stonehenge. It’s more like a 3 hour drive from London.

It depends on what time you travel and where you are in London but generally it takes about 90 mins outside of rush hour traffic. In terms of Avebury versus Stonehenge - its subjective, but the visitor centre at Stonehenge is also pretty cool.

I was at the Rollright Stones on Friday
Well worth a visit especially if you have an interest in witchcraft!

Another vote for tagging on Avebury if possible. Stonehenge is iconic and I find it fascinating but Avebury is more impressive and more accessible, you can get amongst the stones and touch them etc. It's not as well known as Stonehenge but that's not an indicator of it being less worthy of a visit.

If it was me I would consider hiring a minibus and embark on a (long) day trip but I'm comfortable with driving in London and in the UK in general, your comfort level may be different. I don't have any personal experience of companies that offer organised trips from London to Stonehenge so I can't recommend any but there are options available.

The original post was from February but unfortunately “John” hasn’t come back to the thread.

I'll pick up, if the original traveler is gone.

My husband and I have made 6 trips to England in the past 10 years and never been to Stonehenge. But it's always been high on my husband's list.

From what we've heard, I think a round-trip tour out of London would work best. And if it included Avebury too, all the better.

Has anyone been on such a tour or know which is a good one?

That link looks pretty nice, Ian.
