Visiting Chester

We will be in Liverpool the beginning of September. We were there many years ago and thought we would go back for a day. It will be a Saturday when we plan to travel there. I saw online that trains to Chester can be very crowded on weekends. Do you know if this will be a problem or if we should just be able to buy a ticket and go? Also, when we were there, we visited the cathedral, walked the walls, took a boat ride, saw the double decker shops - I think that was it. In looking on line at the tourist sites listed, the museums don't seem to get high marks. Does anyone have suggestions?

The local trains from Liverpool to Chester are run by Merseyrail and go every 15 minutes on Saturdays, every 30 minutes on Sundays, for most of the day. I went on a Saturday in September 2016 and had no problems getting a seat. If you're worried, the train makes 4 stops in Liverpool before going under the Mersey towards Chester - Moorfields, then Lime Street, then Central, then James Street. So, if you get on at Moorfields, you should be able to get a seat as people get off at the other stops.

At least on my weekend in 2016, it was £5 for a day ticket for Merseyrail. This means you could stop off at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, which I didn't get to but which our poster Emma recommends. It's near the Bebington Station: http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/ladylever/visit/getting-here.aspx

If you want more details of my Liverpool and Chester visit (which was GREAT), here's my trip report: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/uk-trip-report-glasgow-manchester-liverpool-in-september-2016

The museums in Chester aren't up to much, at least not the ones I went to. The Deva Roman Experience is distinctly underwhelming. Best stick to wandering the city and walls, looking at the cathedral and so on.
