Visiting Castle Howard in Yorkshire

We will be in York in mid October this year for three nights, then moving east with the next night in Pickering. Originally, I had planned to stop in Castle Howard on the way to Pickering, then catching the Noon steam train to Whitby, spend an afternoon in Whitby, return to Pickering for the evening (we are booked in a B&B there for one night).

After some study of what I find on the internet about Castle Howard, I suspect that this plan would not give us enough time at Castle Howard.

Another option is to spend 3 or 4 hours at Castle Howard (is that suitable to see the premises?) then drive on to Pickering, spend the night there, get up early the next morning and take the 9:25AM train to Whitby(arriving 11AM), return to Pickering on the 2PM train(14:00) - arriving at 3:30PM (15:40).  We could take then 3PM train and arrive at 4:55PM. Our next city to visit is Durham, which is at least two hours or more of driving.

A third option is similar to the second, is after spending the night in Pickering, drive to Whitby instead of experiencing the train, then drive from Whitby to Durham.

A side questions becomes, just how nice is the train ride vs. our driving, and our missing driving through the Yorkshire Dales to Durham?

I would skip the train and take option three. Otherwise you're rushing around trying to fit into the train schedule.

See Castle Howard - takes half a day - then drive to Pickering when you're ready. If you want to see trains then head to Grosmont and visit the locomotive shed.

There's plenty to do see Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Sleights.

The areas you're covering is the North Yorks Moors rather than the Dales (which are west of the A1).

Thanks, Rambling,
I thought about driving to Grosmont then taking the train to Whitby, then after visiting Whitby, taking the train back to Grosmont, but the railway doesn't seem to offer that option.

It appears that our choices come down to how interesting the train ride. Grosmont does seem to be an interesting town on its own, over and above the rail station and antique trains.

The train ride on the North York Moors Steam Railway is quite pleasant but in mid-October that could be different if the weather is miserable. As I recall, they have a "day ticket" which allows passengers to hop on/hop off in different towns. I found that travel on the railway provided an interesting glimpse of the past, such as the cable operated signals that are operated from the control tower.

In addition to Grosmont, you could also make a brief stop in Goathland (aka "Aidensfield") which is famous from the Heartbeat TV series that was filmed there. The rail station in Goathland was also used in one of the Harry Potter movies, and it looks like it's right out of the 18th century.

If you're interested in WW-II history, Eden Camp is also not far from York. It used to be a POW camp for axis prisoners during the war. Each of the ~28 huts has a different theme and it would be easy to spend a full day there.

I would consider how confident you are to drive on the left and take into consideration that the road between Whitby and Pickering is very scenic and ok between the villages but when you go through Goathland and Grosmont for example, it can be very narrow and steep. Also being October you have to contend with the nights getting darker earlier and who knows what the weather will be like.
