We are flying into Heathrow 2 days before we start a tour. Our tour leaves from Gatwick. We would like to stay in an area fairly close to Gatwick. We like smaller towns/ villages that are walkable. Any ideas? Thanks!

Balcombe is nice and you can get a train directly to Gatwick in about 10 mins. We have done some nice walks around there. However, I don't know what the accommodation options are.

Horley is not a bad little town. It's so close to Gatwick that you can see the end of Gatwick station platforms from the end of Horley platforms. In spite of that I rarely suffered from airline noise in the year or so I lived there when working at Gatwick on a terminal extension.
It certainly isn't the chocolate box village you are probably looking for, more the nicer villagey outer edge of commuter land.

You could always try anywhere on the Thameslink south of London Bridge. I know some who have stayed in the Croydon area, Three Bridges, etc. which are a bit quieter. Have you looked at the village of Horsham in Sussex? I think that is about 20 minutes away from LGW if I'm not mistaken.
