Village for country walks, train ride from London

We will be in London for a few days, then would like to take the train to a village where we can walk in some woodlands or near a river and woodlands, for a few days. We hope for at least two or three walking trails leading right from the village.
Any suggestions of villages to look into?

Watching with interest, would love to some day post up in a nice village not too far from London with good country walks.

A good way to find these kinds of walks is to google ‘pub walks’ and then the area. Pubs are nearly always in villages and some have accommodation as well. Going for a long walk that ends in a village pub is a very British activity!

You didn't indicate what time of year. That makes a difference.......

Off hand, I'm with Claudia. I'm not sure the imagined romance of a village and woodland walk will meet reality. I've done country walks, but combined with an interest in the villages or site itself (like Tintern Abbey or Chequers.). It might not be necessary to leave greater London for a unique outdoor experience. In addition to Claudia's suggestions, I would consider Kew Gardens also.

If the train ride is necessary, have you considered Winchester? Mentioned here along with some other woodlands. https://www.timeout.com/london/travel/forests-woodland-walks-near-london

Here are some other walks - check St Alban's. https://www.enjoystalbans.com/walks-and-trails/?view=grid&keyword=&order=alpha

Epping Forest was the first place that sprung to mind for me. Last time I went there I caught a train to Chingford. If you're going from central London you can do this at Liverpool Street.

Theydon Bois on the Central Line is another station with good access to Epping Forest.
