Using chip cards which are not tap-enabled?

After trying several search words/phrases, I haven't seen this question clearly answered; perhaps it has been and I didn't understand.

One each of our credit and debit cards are chipped yet not tap-enabled. Is it reasonable to assume that they can still be used at shops, restaurants, lodging, etc? What about using the credit card to board/exit Tube platforms or other transport?

Thank you in advance!

shops, restaurants, lodging

Yes, you will just insert into a card reader (if available)

board/exit Tube platforms

No, you will need an Oyster card or phone with Apple / Google Pay (or buy a tube ticket - expensive)

You will need them to be tap enabled to use to board/exit Tube platforms or other transport. Otherwise you will need to get an Oyster Card. Or if you have a card loaded on an I-phone, although I am not really up on that.

Maybe you can order new cards from your providers that are tap-enabled.

ramblin' on, thanks. Confirms my anticipation that a chip card would not work for the Tube, which leaves us with either Apple/Google or the Oyster card. We will be in London for 4 nights - 3 full days and a partial at the beginning.

Sam, thanks as well. Unfortunately there isn't time to have tap cards delivered for this trip. There is time before the next trip . . .
