It seems we can use our Oyster cards to ride South Western Railroad out to Hampton Court. But I can't figure out what the fare would be versus buying an advance ticket. Much more convenient to just Tap-In, but we don't want to be ripped off. Can anyone help me with this? (We are staying in Covent Garden.) Also, is there a better alternative going to Heathrow and then bus from there? Any help appreciated,
One way is £8 peak, £5:50 off peak. Marginally cheaper via Vauxhall. That is without taking any daily capping etc into account.
You can look it up on the TFL website here: https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/fares/single-fare-finder
Covent Garden Underground Station to Hampton Court Rail Station is
Peak: £8.00 Monday to Friday from 0630 to 0930 and from 1600 to 1900.
Off Peak: £5.50 At all other times including public holidays.
There are no advance fares for such short journeys. And advance fares are on national rail only, they don't cover the tube from Covent Garden.
BTW, the company is South Western Railway. "Railroad" is a US word that is not used in the UK.
And you "travel by" train, not "ride", that implies you are sitting on top, like riding a horse. ☺
If you are staying in Covent Garden, my suggestion would be to walk above ground to Leicester Square tube station, from where the Northern Line will take you directly to Waterloo for the train to Hampton Court. Travelling from Covent Garden station isn't worth the hassle of changing lines given how close the two stations are to one another.
If you are open to a bit of a bus tour enroute, take the 87 bus from The Strand to Vauxhall station. Pass by Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, Parliament, Westminster Abbey etc (and save a further £1.10). Or mix and match with the Waterloo route above.
I went to Hampton Court yesterday.
I started at Earl's Court which is in both zones 1 and 2. District line to Wimbledon, Southwestern train to Hampton Court. Used Oyster card. £2.90 each way but that's the fare from Zone 2. Covent Garden is in zone 1. The trains to and from Hampton Court run every half hour.
When you get to Hampton Court don't forget to tap in and out. No barriers. The machines are on the side at the entrance to the tracks.
Hampton Court is in zone 6.
Also, the daily cap for travel between zones 1-6 is £12.50, whether you're traveling Peak or Off-Peak. So that's the max you'll pay for your trip out and back to Hampton Court even if you travel during Peak times.
