USA-LHR-Europe-long layover-can I go to airport hotel-what visa do I need?

I'm connecting from USA via LHR to another destination in Europe with a long layover (9 hours). I want to go to an airport hotel to sleep. I assume that I can do this? Can I get the UK ETA Visa vs. the Transit Visa? I'm only staying for 7 hours, but I might be back within the next 2 years. So, I'd prefer to just get the longer one, as they appear to have similars costs. Thanks. Elaine

Since you need to go through Immigration to reach a hotel, yes, you need an ETA. Obtained before you leave the US.

You haven't told us what passport you hold, but assuming you're a US citizen you don't need a visa unless you have a criminal record or have previously been refused entry.

What you DO need is an ETA - this is not a visa. Make sure you use the official site/app:

You need an ETA. Period.

As to going to an airport hotel to sleep, what hours will you be in London? Most hotels don't offer hourly service nor are available for check in and check out at any time. I believe the Aerotel at Terminal 3 allows for hourly bookings. It's not fancy but for a few hours of sleep it's fine.

If you have access to an airline lounge, some have sleeping pods that can be reserved. Access to the lounge also means free food, drink and possibly a shower.

I’ve used the Aerotel and it’s a great option. Basic accommodations but enough. There are no windows, so it’s nice and dark and quiet. I stayed there when I arrived in London very early in the morning. I chose the three hour stay, slept for two, showered and then headed into the city. I felt so much better. My issue after a long flight is less about jet lag and more about sleep deprivation so the two hour morning nap really helps reset my clock.
