Coventry Cathedral - Entry fee and luggage storage

Just a heads-up that the welcome desk at Coventry Cathedral will no longer watch your bags while you tour the new cathedral and ruins of the old. This is a change from what is printed in the RS England book 7th edition (This may have already been updated in a newer edition.)
We had been depending on being able to leave our bags, but they did allow us to take our bags into the cathedral, as long as we kept them with us. Since part of enjoying the cathedral was to sit and take in the immensity of the place, our group of four divided into 2, taking turns having 2 people “luggage sitting” while 2 went off and explored. Once we finished seeing the new cathedral we all exited toward the ruins. (If you have luggage, don’t try to go up the many stairs that you first see. Turn right, walk to the far end of the ruins, and enter much more easily.)

Another change - Coventry no longer has a set price of admission, but it does ask for a donation.

Tip - The cathedral café was really good! We ate lunch there and everything was delicious, including a wonderful homemade soup. After touring, we went back for tea, and were delighted with the homemade cakes and scones, and numerous other baked goods.

Tip - Most Mondays there is a free 1/2 hour organ recital at 1 pm (13.00). Well worth the time to hear this stunning instrument in addition to seeing its beautiful design!

All in all we had a wonderful visit, despite the inconvenience with the luggage!

Thanks for the update.

You had a plan. There was a glitch. You were flexible and overcame the problem.

More importantly you enjoyed the cathedral visit, the recital and the scones.

Thank you, Harold and Claudia, for your comments. (I have now filled out an update info form.)
We were traveling between Cambridge and Oxford on a longer trip, with a stay of several days in each town because of musical events we were attending. My goal was to add as much sightseeing to our 17-day trip as I could, since it was not a normal sight-seeing trip. When planning our move from Cambridge to Oxford I searched out coach travel because of the lack of a direct train service between Cambridge and Oxford. (We know about routing through London but we wanted to avoid it if possible; on a previous occasion on this route many things went wrong on the connection in London due to underground closures and late trains. It was painful.)

Anyway, I was thrilled to find an express bus that leaves Cambridge at 9.00 and gets to Coventry in 2 hours flat! That would let us add a sightseeing stop on our move to Oxford. The only problem was that we would have our luggage with us on our visit, and I actually spent a good amount of time during initial planning figuring out what we'd do, including emailing the cathedral (they never answered).

To sum up, I'm glad that the luggage issue didn't derail our visit, since we had a wonderful time there and learned so much, increasing greatly our knowledge about what the English people survived in World War II, and learning that Coventry Cathedral is a major center for peace and reconciliation work, with multiple gifts and monuments given by different groups worldwide in honor of their work. For example, there is a sculpture called Choir of Survivors given by the Frauenkirche in Dresden, Germany. (Pictures at this blog post: https://shoffmire.blogspot.com/2015/11/coventry-cathedral.html )

We spent about 3-4 hours in and around the cathedral, then consulted our satnav (Google!) and found a decent walking path to the train station - most of which went through pedestrian walkways in the main downtown (no traffic!). We caught our train and were in Oxford in less than an hour, took a cheap taxi to our apartment rental, and were ready for our next 5 days.

For future reference there is the X5 bus between Oxford and Cambridge twice an hour via Milton Keynes, run by Stagecoach. Although it is a considered legally a bus service, and it makes quite a few stops, the vehicles used are coaches, with air conditioning, toilets etc.
