Unlocked cell phones

My wife and I are travelling through Europe in September. I want to take my cell along incase of emergencies at home and to help along the way with maps etc.

I have a iPhone 5 through the Bell network in Canada and was hoping someone in the forum could suggest a pay as you go provider who I could use. We land at Gatwick and tour London, Paris, and through Italy. Does anyone have suggestions?

Thanking you in advance

Bob

What we like is Sim Smart Prepaid which is cheap, good in 170 countries, shows you how to insert the sim card, ships free, and has a 14 day money back guarantee. They often have discounts going on too- right now you can get 5% off. You choose what you want from a selection of options and can prepay and be good to go. Choose how much you think you'll need and prepay for your service with no bills or contracts. If you get to Europe /the UK and find you need more time, it's easy to recharge and add more time online. We have used this a lot!

Bob,

What Nigel said.

I haven't checked on Bell in awhile as I use Rogers, but you should be able to use your iPhone 5 in Europe. However, it MUST be unlocked, which it likely isn't at the present time. If you obtained the phone from Bell, it's likely locked to their network. If you've been with them for awhile, you can ask them what the cost would be to unlock the phone.

As you're travelling "throughout Europe", you might consider getting a travel SIM, which provides consistent rates in most western European countries, and in many cases no need to top-up as billing is post-paid (calls charged to a credit card). The one issue with that approach is that data costs can be expensive, so you'll have to decide whether you want access to cellular data or whether Wi-Fi only will suffice. Have a look at the websites for Roam Simple, Cellular Abroad, Telestial, Mobal, Lebara or EuroBuzz for information and costs.

I've been using a travel SIM for several years, first with a basic "flip phone" and now with an iPhone and it's worked quite well.
