I'll be renting a car for travel of the UK and wondered about cell phone charging. Maybe a silly question, but , assuming I'll be driving the newest of models, would the USB ports be the same as in the US - voltage wise? Should I bring my USB-c adapter for the cigarette lighter?
you probably won't find a cigarette lighter in the car, but there would probably the place one would go. Probably USB and or HDMI sockets. But it all depends on the brand and model. They are pretty universal around most of the world, so what you would find on a similar rental car at home will be on a similar car here.
Voltage is the same - where the cigarette light would go is 12vDC negative ground. USB is 5vDV. Just like at home.
But I don't know what models or size you are looking at. BMW? Range Rover? Honda? Ford?
Modern cell phones are all dual voltage so you won't need a converter anywhere in the UK or Europe, car or standard plug.
My car in Scotland, which was fairly new, had a USB-A port, which I used to charge my cell phone. And as the others said, USB ports are universal so no need for an adaptor in your car or hote. The only thing you need an adaptor for is an electrical outlet.
I doubt if it will have a USB-C port (although it may), but I would be prepared to use a charger cord for a USB-A to whatever connection goes in your phone (USB-A to lightning OR USB-A to USB-C).
The last vehicle I rented in the UK last October had USB-2 ports. The car I currently have in Spain (a Ford) has both a USB-2 and a USB-C ports. Last year my Seat Arona only had a USB-C port. After that trip I bought a cord with USB-C connector (lightening to USB-C). The ports work the same as in the states. Since the new EU standard is USB-C, if you get a new vehicle it may only have that type port.
Thanks all. Glad to here my phone will charge in a UK car... I'll play it safe and come with a USB-c adapter.
