note that that change is only for a few ticket types. Advance are not changed, for instance

to be specific, it is only on 5 types of ticket

  • Anytime tickets

  • Off-Peak tickets

  • Day Travelcards

  • Rover tickets

  • Ranger tickets

in other words regulated walk up tickets. Only the first 2 will be used by most travellers these days, and many folk will avail Advance Tickets which have their own rules.

For the listed 5 types, a ticket can only be returned unused for a refund up to 11:59pm the night before travel or when the ticket becomes valid, including both halves of a return ticket.

I don't see how that will adversely affect most people, but it will help with fare dodgers. Well done, I say, having dealt with fare dodgers every day that I worked on the railway.

The Man in Seat 61 is now advising people who want flexible tickets (ie- not Advance fixed train ones) to only buy on the day (not ahead of time)- just in case you can't travel on the day due to ill health or other causes (but make reservations only for the trains you think you will be travelling on).

I think that is overkill, but there you are.
