UK Disabled Railcard Issue- Help

I think I messed up on LNER tickets I purchased from London to Edinburgh. A couple months ago I purchased tickets for myself and my traveling companion (who is visually impaired). I selected the Disabled Railcard discount - even though we didn't have the railcard. She is partially blind and from Australia and I am her traveling companion.

I had read that if you were visually impaired you didn't need the Disabled Railcard -you could just present proof (which we have with Doctor's letter and a New South Wales disability card.

I am worried that we don't have the actual Disabled Railcard. I tried apply for it online but since she isn't from UK - she doesnt have the UK documentation and they appear to only handle UK documents.

Should I be concerned that we are going to have an issue when we present our tickets on the train? The tickets were advance purchase and are not refundable.

Help!
Mary

I found this info…it looks like they can only issue a disabled persons rail card with UK documentation. You’re right there are concessions for visually impaired; but these discounts appear to be sold at staffed ticket offices and only on anytime (not advance purchase) tickets.

I have no first hand experience so happy to be corrected if I’ve misunderstood the webpage.

If you travel without the railcard that you said you would have when you initially bought the tickets you risk a fine/penalty fare. My mum does have a disabled railcard and says she’s asked to show it more often than not when presenting her ticket for inspection.

I don’t know if it would be possible to go to a ticket office once you arrive in the UK and see if a human is able to sell you a railcard with your Oz documents. That might be the cheapest option.

From the Disabled Railcard FAQ:

I don't live in Great Britain or receive UK disability benefits - can I apply for a Disabled Persons Railcard?
A:
Unfortunately we do not have the resources or expertise to be able to validate documentation from outside the United Kingdom (UK) so we can only accept UK-based documentation as proof of eligibility

Could they obtain documentation from an Optician once in London. Specsavers, Vision Express, Boots and many more can be found all over the place and very easy to book an appointment.

From their website - evidence needed of visual impairment:
Social Services official stamp in the space allocated on the downloadable form if applying online or on a paper application form

OR

A copy of your Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI), BP1 Certificate (Scotland) or BD8 Certificate for being registered blind or partially-sighted

The CVI appears to be issued after assessment by an opthalmologist consultant (specialist).

I'm not sure that your friend is going to be able to get one.

Can you cancel your tickets, get a refund and purchase the correct tickets?

We have at least one forum member who has purchased a Disabled Railcard from the US- in her case, a hearing issue. It shouldn't be different from Australia, than from the US.

I'm not one for "dropping people in it", but hopefully she sees this thread and can tell you her experience.

I'm looking back on the forum to her post this seems to be the process-

For anyone who qualifies, it was very easy. You visit this site - https://secure.railcard.co.uk/purchase/disabled-persons - to start the
application. During the process, they ask for medical documentation. I pulled up my hearing diagnosis from My Chart and uploaded it to the application, added all my other personal information.

[My Chart must be a US thing- but the Doctor's letter/NSW disability card should serve the same purpose]

My Chart is also used by Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge - not entirely usA

I’m the person isn31 is talking about. I have a Disabled Railcard because of hearing issues, and there is another person here on this forum who also has it for that reason. In fact she is the one who told me about it.

All I can tell you is that when I applied for it, I submitted my documentation as requested and it went through. I gave them everything they asked for, and even though it was not UK based, they accepted it. So I would go ahead and submit the application with the documentation. I don’t think there’s any harm in doing that, and if they accept it then great. If they don’t then you’ll know.

For what it’s worth, I submitted mine in late 2023, so not that long ago. I renewed it at the end of 2025 with no problems.

Stuart, MyChart is a web-based application where you can communicate with your physician, gain access to your medical records and much more. I was able to go into MyChart to get my medical records there which is what I then uploaded to the British site.

Mary, you are welcome to PM me if you have any additional questions or need some help.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I checked with LNER and they said we had to have the disabled Railcard. So if we don’t have it I will need to just lose cost of non refundable advance ticket and rebook new tickets. My fault for not checking properly and we can afford to eat the loss.

Thanks to person with hearing loss from US- I was going to give up on trying to apply for the card with Australian documentation but based on your reply we will give it a try. Nothing to lose but I don’t want to wait too long since price of tickets will go up.
Really appreciate everyone’s help

mboggs1, are you Mary, or are you someone else? I'm a little confused because your username changed.

At any rate, if that's you, again, I will again reiterate that you are more than welcome to PM me if you have any questions about the process. It was relatively easy, but as always, when you're submitting stuff like that, it can get a little confusing at times. 😊

I also am an American with Disabled Railcard due to hearing issues. I simply submitted my US documentation and had no difficulties. For anyone who is interested, wearing hearing aids qualifies for this Railcard.

Interesting about hearing aids being co soldered a disability.
Thanks to everyone’s help, we are going to fill out the Disabled Railcard application and submit the docs we have and see what happens. I figure I’ve got a little time where I can still get replacement Advance tickets but hoping she gets approved for the Disabled Railcard and we don’t have to scrap the original tickets.

I really appreciate all the feedback that everyone shares on this forum. It helps with travel planning. I am finding the rail system in the UK harder to figure out than the rest of Europe. lol

Hearing loss is a real issue for train travel because announcements about delays etc are made over the public address system at the stations and on board the trains. If you can’t hear well you’ll probably have to ask somebody else what’s going on.

That's so true. Even with hearing aids, the amplification of those messages can distort them a bit, which makes it more difficult to hear through the hearing aids. It's a real problem for me.

I wanted to add that once you get your disabled persons railcard, you can register it with an Oyster Card and receive a discount on the tube when using that Oyster Card.

Carol
Thanks for the information about using it on the Oyster Card. We were just going to tap with credit card but will now get an oyster card if she is approved.

We submitted the application last night along with her Australian docs- so hopefully we will hear something soo ,

Oh, I forgot to tell you about the Oyster card. Carol is right, it does give you a discount. It's pretty easy to do, but you can't do it until you get to Heathrow. It only took me about ten minutes to go to one of the stations there. I'll look through my notes and get you more information about how to do it.

EDIT: To add the Disabled Railcard to your Oyster Card, you will go through passport control and security at Heathrow. Then head to the Underground entrance and look for a ticket office/staffed barrier in the Underground stations at Terminals 2 & 3, Terminal 4, or 5. It must be an Underground (Tube) station that you get it at, not the Elizabeth Line, as that is National Rail.

Keep in mind that the office might be closed depending on when you get there. I think that it opened at 9 a.m., although I'm not positive. It may have been 10. Edit: I did check and it opened at 9am. I had to wait about thirty plus minutes for them to open.

But it's worth it to get it there. If you don't, you can get it later at another London Underground or Overground station in the city, in the meantime, you'll have to pay full price.

One last thing to remember. Do NOT get the Visitor Oyster card. Make sure you get the one that is for residents, as you cannot put the disability card on a Visitor Oyster card.

Thought I would give a final update on the issue. Applies for the disabled Railcard and it was denied . They didn’t like the Australian documentation which was mainly a letter from her doctor.

But I did check with LNER and asked if there was anyway to not lose the cost of the Advance Purchase non refundable tickets . We can book new tickets with either a different date (which is impossible for our travel plans) or we can stay on same date and just change the time of the trip ( we are flexible to do that). After we have the new Tim booking we can request a refund of the original tickets less a small admin fee

We are going to get a Two Together Railcard which will give us a discount on these tickets along with other tickets to to Bath

So we are only out a small amount of money

Thanks everyone for all the answers and support . I learned a lot and this is a great travel community
