Uber/Lyft in London?

Do these companies operate in London or is it best to use taxis? Thanks.

A quick google search shows that Uber does operate in London. After a tiff with the British government back in 2017, they are now good corporate citizens and can operate in London. Didn’t google Lyft.

all depends on if you want to save the last few pennies and have a driver who may or may not have any knowledge of where they are and may or may not know how to use the sat nav, or if you don't mind paying a bit more and getting the benefit of the Knowledge and the thrill of a real Black Cab where some can face backwards.

I used Uber in London once, it was actually my first time using it. I was at Harrods at closing time on a Friday nite and it was pouring rain. I did not know where the tube station was and so I used my app and had uber come to take me back to my hotel. There were no cabs to be found as all were busy on a rainy Friday nite. It was great to have Uber and saved me!

I don't know which is better to use Uber or a taxi but I will say this, if no taxi is around then at least you have Uber to fall back on.

IMO while in London use a cab, it’s fun talking to the cabbie. You can use Uber anytime at home, why don’t experience something new while in London.

I used Uber in London back in May. I also used it in Liverpool and Manchester. It works the same as it does in the USA and it’s nice knowing the fare upfront which you don’t get with a cab. No idea about Lyft, I’ve got an excellent Uber rating so I stick with them.

Personally I don't really use Uber in London unless I have no other choice. I've had several Uber drivers who haven't a clue and I've had to give THEM directions for where I want to go. You will never have this problem with the black cabs - they literally have encyclopedic knowledge of the city, will get you to your destination by the most efficient way, and are all very interesting to talk to. The 40,000+ Uber drivers there are adding to the congestion of the city - I'm not a fan.

I love the wonderful public transport options in London, but I've been happy with the black cab service the times I've needed them--got lucky with charming & friendly drivers who got me quickly where I needed to be when I missed a hotel pickup for a tour one morning and another when the tube line I needed was closed and I had to meet a tour group very early and felt anxious about taking 2 buses.
