It appears that the U.K. has now adopted similar procedures as the E.U., and will now be checking travellers both when entering and leaving the country.

This shouldn't affect the average tourist, but I'm sure they'll snare a few scofflaws with these new procedures.
This applies to ferries and the Eurostar service, not air flights.

Thanks for the note. Information in the link stated "as people leave the country by sea, air or rail" so I assumed that meant all modes of transport.
Effectively the information was already collected for a high percentage of air travellers already and as it happens largely behind the scenes in advance of travel it wasn't that noticeable.
In a different move, the cost of non emergency hospital & other health treatment within the NHS has been raised by 50% for non-residents from outside the EU.
